Five orphans --- Virgola; Carnera; Sonna; Ta-Ta; and Il Capo --- whose parents were killed during the War in a bombardment, live together in the cellar of a ruined house, guarded by an old porter. One day, a part of the brittle brick wall in the cellar collapses, forming a hole, which the smallest of the boys --- Virgola --- is able to crawl through. In this formerly unknown room, they find boxes filled with 1,000 Lire notes. But what are the five boys to do with their newfound wealth? They certainly can't go around handing out 1,000 Lire notes, for then their treasure will certainly be discovered by prying eyes. They are able to gain the confidence of young Mario, who goes about helping the orphans to spend the money to their hearts' desire. Satisfied and grateful, they decide to share the wealth with other, less-fortunate children.

Fünf Waisen namens Virgola, Carnera, Sonna, Tà-Tà und Il Capo, deren Eltern während der Bombardierung im Krieg ums Leben gekommen sind, leben gemeinsam im Keller einer Häuserruine, die von einem alten Portier bewacht wird. Eines Tages wird durch brüchige Ziegelsteine ein Loch in der Wand des Kellers frei, durch das Virgola, der kleinste der Jungen, durchkriechen kann. In dem bisher unbekannten Raum findet er mehrere Kassetten, die mit 1000-Lire-Scheinen gefüllt sind. Doch wie sollen die fünf Jungen mit dem neuen Reichtum umgehen? Sie können kein Geld ausgeben, ohne dass andere ihren Fund bemerken würden! Es gelingt ihnen, das Vertrauen des Jugendlichen Mario zu gewinnen, der ihnen dabei hilft, sich mit dem Geld ihre sehnlichsten Wünsche zu erfüllen. Nach Gelingen dieses Vorhabens offenbaren die fünf Jungen ihr gutes Herz indem sie beschließen, auch andere Kinder mit schönen Dingen zu überraschen.
