I couldn't stop smiling watching the film-- I didn't want it to end! In such a strong cast, Hans Hermann Schaufuß was an unexpected standout as the barking regimental surgeon that has no patience for "civilian" nonsense.

The picture quality is pretty good, but I will note it seems during the film's production, the cameras weren't as stabilized as they could have been-- there's some swaying or bouncing around in a few scenes. It's not so bad that it becomes distracting, though. You also wouldn't guess that this film is an early "talkie," as the actors aren't too hammy, and the musical numbers are very well done.

And with the DVD, I'm very grateful for the option of English subtitles-- there's no missing out on any of the jokes or sarcasm that is rife throughout the movie. In all, this film is pure delight!

Ein wunderbar gelungener Streifen - voller Selbstironie, schräg-witzigen Einfällen (das Konzert der Nichten!) und mit genial agierenden Darstellern. Man weiß hier gar nicht, wen man alles namentlich benennen soll, so überragend spielt das Ensemble - allen voran der hier unglaublich galante Conrad Veidt und Lilian Harvey, die ich selten in einem Film besser erlebt habe. Aber auch Mady Christians als Kaiserin etc. pp. UNBEDINGT EMPFEHLENSWERT!!!

Vastly overplayed, unecessarily silly, almost 'slapstick' nonsense, wonder if Danny Kaye ever made a reboot....
