Before being drafted into the army, Corporal Wolfgang Schwab was a composer.  Therefore, he is more than pleased when a radio station invites him to conduct his "Summer Fantasy" for its program "Composers in Uniform".  Wolfgang views this invitation to come to Berlin on leave like a gift from the gods after all the tribulations he has had to go through at the front.  And while in Berlin, he gets to know the young student Eva-Maria.  They spend a wonderful, romantic day together; but their parting the next day doesn't take place, because Eva arrives late at the train station and Wolfgang can't wait for her any longer or he'll miss his train.  And so begins a feverish search for the two lovers to find one another, which is a little more than difficult, because neither knows the other's last name! 

Vor seiner Einberufung zur Armee war der Gefreite Wolfgang Schwab Komponist - umso erfreuter ist er daher, als ein Rundfunksender ihn einlädt, seine "Sommerliche Phantasie" für die Sendung "Komponisten im Waffenrock" zu dirigieren. Wie ein Geschenk der Götter empfindet Wolfgang diesen Urlaubstag in Berlin nach all den harten Einsätzen an der Front. Und in dieser Stadt lernt er die junge Studentin Eva-Maria kennen. Die beiden verbringen einen wundervollen, romantischen Tag miteinander, doch ihre Verabredung für den nächsten Tag kommt nicht zustande, weil Eva sich verspätet und Wolfgang nicht länger warten kann, da er sonst seinen Zug verpassen würde.  So beginnt für die zwei Liebenden eine fieberhafte Suche nacheinander, die sich gleichwohl überaus schwierig gestaltet, da die beiden nur den Vornamen des anderen kennen.
