THE LIVING HEAD  (1963)  * with switchable English and French subtitles *

A trio of archaeologists uncover the ancient Aztec tomb of Acatl, a great warrior killed by a traitorous priest centuries ago. Once inside, the diggers find Acatl's decapitated head and the mummies of his high priest and priestess, Xiu and Xochiquetzal. The released pressure of the sepulcher disintegrates the beautiful priestess leaving only dust and a strange ring with an eye in the center. Ignoring the warning of the Aztecs that all desecrators will die, the scientists return home with the head of Acatl, the mummy of Xiu and the Ring of Death. It isn't long before Xiu returns to life and, commanded by the head of the Acatl, seeks revenge for the defilement.

 

THE WEDDING MARCH  (1928)

Prince Nikki, Lieutenant of the Guard in pre-WWI Vienna, is flat broke, but the only advice he gets from his parents is either to shoot himself or to marry money. During a Corpus Christi parade, his horse accidentaly hurts poor Mitzi, the daughter of inn-keepers in a Viennese suburb, who is, according to the wishes of her parents, going to marry the butcher, Schani. When Nikki visits her at the hospital, they fall in love, much to the dislike of her parents and Schani. Nikki's parents, meanwhile have arranged a prospective marriage with Cecilia, the limping daughter of a very rich, non-aristocratic industrialist. Due to the fact that Nikki's father is a general in the Austrian-Hungarian Army, resistance is useless. When Mitzi, after hearing of it, still refuses Schani's proposal, he vowes to shoot Nikki when he leaves the church.

 

THE VIRGIN OF NUREMBERG  (1963)  * with switchable English and German subtitles *

When Max Hunter leaves his American bride Mary alone in his German castle, a series of gruesome slayings occur in the abandoned torture chamber. In a shocking revelation, a hideous phantom killer, with a ghastly Nazi past, stalks the castle corridors and dusts off some of the tools of torture for some fresh bloodletting.

Auf einem uralten Schloss sind bereits vier Menschen durch mittelalterliche Folterinstrumente zu Tode gequält worden. Mary Garson, die junge Schlossherrin, macht sich auf die Jagd nach dem grausamen Täter, der Nacht für Nacht durch die Kellergewölbe des unheimlichen Gebäudes geistert. THE HIGH COMMAND  (1937)

Major General Sir John Sangye is a decorated British Army veteran serving in a West African outpost. Fifteen years ago, in Ireland, he murdered a fellow officer out of romantic jealousy, yet pinned the blame on Irish Republican rebels. He got away with it at the time, but now a doctor who knows of his hidden past arrives at his new outpost. Old secrets may come back to ruin the major general's reputation -- and the honor of his daughter.

 

THE TROJAN WOMEN  (1971)

Hecuba and the other women of Troy rise to find their city in ruins and their cause lost. The city has fallen into Greek hands and it is likely their lot to become slaves of Greek soldiers. A messenger approaches to inform them that the lots have been drawn and each woman will be taken to the man who drew for her. Of particular interest is Hecuba's daughter, Cassandra, who is chosen for the Greek king’s bedchamber. She has received word of this news already and is in hiding because she has sworn an oath to the gods that she will live as a virgin. When she is found she has some particularly nasty things to say about treatment at Greek hands.

 

DIE FESTUNG  (1964)

After the Second World War has ended, expelled refugees from East Prussia arrive "Heim ins Reich", among them the Starosta family, which, along with other refugees, are housed in a former fortress. Hugo, the father, can't seem to come to grips with his new home and continually looks for his future away from the fortress-camp. His children, however, are more than active ... but in ways which are leading them down the wrong path in life.

Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs kommt die aus Ostpreußen geflohene Familie Starosta gemeinsam mit anderen Flüchtlingen in einer ehemaligen Festung unter. Vater Hugo gibt das patriarchalische Familienoberhaupt, verharrt aber in Untätigkeit, wenn es gilt, wieder im Leben Fuß zu fassen und sich eine Zukunft außerhalb des Flüchtlingslagers zu suchen. Seine Kinder hingegen scheinen zunehmend auf die schiefe Bahn zu geraten.

 

DIE BUDDENBROOKS  (1959)

The rise and fall of the Buddenbrook household, a patrician family from Lubeck, during the period from 1845 until the end of the Century. Consul Buddenbrooks is a supporter of the construction of a railroad from Hamburg to Lubeck. He has the dubious honor of watching his sons march off to fight in the Austro-Prussian War, while fighting against the rising tide of socialism. During all that, the members of his family experience the joys of love and the sorrows of affairs. 

Glanz und Verfall des Hauses Buddenbrooks, eine Lübecker Patrizierfamilie, die von 1845 bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts die Zeitläufe erlebt. Konsul Buddenbrooks unterstützt den Bau der Eisenbahn Hamburg-Lübeck, sieht seine Söhne in den preußisch-österreichischen Krieg ziehen und kämpft gegen die aufkommende Sozialdemokratie. Dazwischen erleben die Mitglieder der Familie Liebesfreud und -leid und Affären. 

 

NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE  (1979) * with switchable English subtitles *

Jonathan Harker and his wife, Lucy, live in the port city of Wismar during the 19th Century. Jonathan is ordered by his employer to travel to Transylvania to close a real estate deal with Count Dracula ... and for once, it won't be the buyer who's getting screwed over. On his way to the castle, gypsies warn him not to go and no one will help him get there. As Uber and Lyft were not yet on the scene, Jonathan is forced to get to the evil palace on his own. After traveling in the Land of the Phantoms by foot, he finally makes it to the Count's place and is greeted by his undead host. Dracula agrees to buy the house, sight unseen, after seeing a picture of Jonathan's wife in a locket. With the promise of a huge commission in his head, Jonathan thinks he's in Realtor Heaven. But later that night, Dracula pays him a visit in his bedroom and puts the bite on Jonathan. Soon after, Dracula leaves by boat for Wismar; obviously in Fourth Class, as he's sleeping in a coffin instead of a cabin. Harker, determined to save Lucy from the vampire (never mind the townspeople he's cursed for all time), somehow makes it back to Wismar, but has had to go by land. When the ship Dracula's traveling on arrives in Wismar, everyone onboard is dead; only a great many rats can be found. When Jonathan finally makes it to his home, he doesn't recognize Lucy anymore. Lucy reads his travel diary and the book he's brought with him about the undead Nosferatu (and you complained about the souvenir your friend brought back from his last trip!). Lucy tries to convince Dr. van Helsing to help her seek out Nosferatu and give him some heartburn after a nice meal of stake and potatoes; but the good doctor believes in science, not superstition. 

Jonathan Harker, der mit seiner Frau Lucy im Wismar des 19. Jahrhunderts lebt, wird beauftragt, nach Transsilvanien zu reisen, um mit Graf Dracula über den Verkauf eines Hauses zu verhandeln. In der Nähe des Schlosses lebende Zigeuner warnen ihn vor dem Grafen und weigern sich, Harker bei seiner Weiterreise zu helfen, so dass er allein zum Schloss geht. Dort wird er von Graf Dracula empfangen und bewirtet. Ohne den Vertragstext gelesen zu haben, unterzeichnet Dracula, nachdem er ein Bildnis von Harkers Frau Lucy gesehen hat. In der kommenden Nacht wird Harker von Dracula heimgesucht und gebissen. Der Vampir reist nun per Schiff in einem Sarg nach Wismar. Der schwer erkrankte und bleicher werdende Harker kehrt ebenfalls in seine Heimatstadt zurück, allerdings auf dem Landweg. Als das Schiff in Wismar anlegt, ist die gesamte Besatzung tot; nur Ratten scheinen auf dem Schiff zu leben. In der Stadt breitet sich nun die Pest aus. Als Harker die Stadt erreicht, erkennt er in seinem fiebrigen Zustand seine Frau nicht mehr. Lucy liest sein Tagebuch und sein mitgeführtes Buch über den Untoten Nosferatu; sie versucht sodann Doktor van Helsing zu überzeugen, dass der nachts umherschleichende Dracula die Ursache der Seuche ist. 

 

MALA NOCHE  (1986) * with switchable English subtitles *

The story follows the relationship between Walt, a gay store clerk, and two younger Mexican boys, Johnny and Roberto Pepper. Walt and his female friend convince them to come over for dinner, but Johnny and Pepper have to return to their cheap hotel because another friend is locked out. Walt makes his first pass at Johnny by offering him $15 to sleep with him. Johnny refuses and runs to his hotel room, leaving Roberto locked out with nowhere to spend the night but Walt's. Settling for second best, Walt lies down next to Pepper and allows him on top for sex. However, he does not give up on trying to win over Johnny. The film progresses from there into not always clearly defined relationships, unbalanced by age, language, money, race and sex.

Set in the Asian forests of Imperial Russia around the turn of the century, Dersu Uzala tells of the relationship between a military mapping expedition and an old Tungus trapper who acts as its guide.  The soldiers sit in the winter forest at night, uncomfortable and scared. There is a rustle in the bushes and, mastering the temptation to flee, they grab the intruder. He is Dersu, a short, stocky, aging tribesman. He sits by the fire with them and when a log crackles he speaks sharply to it.  "Fire is a man," he tells them. "Water is a man, too." The captain, a sensitive intermediary between the brutal confidence of the soldier-surveyors and the mystical trapper, hires him as guide. In a series of episodes, we see Dersu, through the captain's eyes, reveal his total communication with the world he lives in.  Seeing footprints, he knows that men have been by two days before and that they are Chinese. Seeing trees with the bark off, he predicts that they will find shelter; and they do. When the party is about to leave the shelter, he insists on repairing the roof first:  for anyone else who may come along.  In one of the more memorable scenes, Dersu and the captain go out to chart a frozen lake. Kurosawa films the cold as it has rarely, if ever, been filmed. It is a visible, red-eyed enemy; visibly terrifying. The two are lost and Dersu, seeing death, is in total fear. The captain has his civilized schooling to constrain him; he also has a compass.   But when the compass ends up failing, then what?

 

 

ADMIRAL CANARIS – A LIFE FOR GERMANY  (1954) * improved English subtitles *

Typical for the 1950s, the film tampers with historic events:  The head of the Abwehr, Admiral Canaris, is strongly opposed to the Nazi regime and eventually participates in a conspiracy against Hitler.  Obergruppenführer and head of the SD Heydrich turns out to be his most dangerous adversary, who spares no effort to remove Canaris from his post.  But when Heydrich dies – he is shot by Czech resistance fighters – Canaris seems to have escaped the danger.  However, he repeatedly warns against a war with the Soviet Union; to no avail.  Thus, he participates in the assassination attempt of July 20.  Canaris had been unpopular for some time and he's being watched by the authorities.  Finally, he is removed from his job and eventually dealt with. Previously sold by us under the title, Canaris, we've synchronized the soundtrack to be almost perfect and added switchable subtitles.  The film itself, though "entertaining" in a way, will hardly give insight into the reality of the times.  It's a "feel good" movie for a people, who didn't have much to feel good about and needed a good dose of self-congratulatory propaganda of a different kind to remind them that there were "others" in Germany; but most of those watching weren't them.  The last scene, where Canaris' dogs are chasing after the car which has taken him away, is heartbreaking; maybe the only part of the film that reminds the viewer that there really are no winners in any war.

 

Geschichtsverfälschung á la 1950er Jahre: Der Chef der deutschen Abwehr, Admiral Canaris, steht dem Nazi-Regime mehr als kritisch gegenüber und beteiligt sich schließlich an einem Komplott gegen Hitler. Obergruppenführer und SD-Chef Heydrich erweist sich als sein gefährlichster Gegenspieler, der nichts unversucht lässt, die Abwehr unter seine Beaufsichtigung zu bekommen. Nach dessen Tod – er wird von tschechischen Freiheitskämpfern erschossen – scheint der Weg für Canaris frei zu sein. Nachdem Canaris wiederholt vergebens vor einem Krieg gegen die Sowjetunion gewarnt hat, beteiligt er sich an dem Plan des Attentats vom 20. Juli. Aber da er sich bereits früher unbeliebt machte, wird Canaris weiter beobachtet, schließlich seines Postens enthoben und hingerichtet.

 

 

DAS TAGEBUCH EINER VERLORENEN (Diary of a Lost Girl) (1929) * with switchable English subtitles * IMPROVED PICTURE

Young Thymian, herself still a child, is seduced by her father’s servant and is put into a home by the family after the birth of her child out of wedlock.  Like the other girls there, she suffers under the sadistic rule of the housemasters.  With the help of the young, penniless Count Osdorff, she flees the institution and ends up in a brothel in a large city.  Nevetheless, she enjoys this new atmosphere, being the center of a completely different and exciting world for her.  And to financially help out one of the brothel’s patrons, she lets herself be auctioned off in a local nightclub.  Her own father actually takes part in this drawing and shortly dies afterwards.

 

Die junge Thymian, selbst noch ein Kind, wird vom Gehilfen ihres Vaters verführt und nach der Geburt ihres unehelichen Kindes von der Familie in ein Heim gesteckt. Dort leidet sie, wie die anderen Mädchen, unter dem sadistischen Regiment des Vorsteher-Paares. Sie flüchtet mit Hilfe des jungen, mittellosen Grafen Osdorff und landet in einem großstädtischen Bordell. In dieser neuen Umgebung gefällt es ihr, sie wird zum Mittelpunkt einer für sie ganz anderen, aufregenden Welt. Um einem Bordellbesucher finanziell zu helfen, lässt sich Thymian in einem Nachtlokal versteigern. Dieser Auslosung wohnt der eigene Vater bei, der kurz darauf stirbt.

Jojo lives in the attic of an aparment building in Pigalle. He left home after realizing his stepmother never liked him. Among his many neighbors is gorgeous Jenny Dorr, a nightclub dancer, whose lover he dreams of becoming one day. But since Jojo's only sixteen years old, Jenny's shown herself to be kind and motherly, but nothing more. Worse, she's Dicky's lover, a mediocre boxer who spends a good deal of his time loafing in Pigalle's cafes. Jojo, on the other hand, has no income and must absolutely find work; especially as he's been wooing Marietta, another neighbor and a young lady more suited to his age. Selling magazines helps (for a while); but posing as Narcissus for two gay artists proves to be a disaster. When things start going really badly for Jojo, the boy tries to commit suicide by jumping off the roof of the apartment building.

Otto Quangel, a simple craftsman, lives with his wife Anna in 1940s Berlin. The couple have little interest in political or military matters. All that changes, however, when their only son dies in France during the Western Campaign. Then, these two seemingly inconspicuous citizens suddenly change radically and fearlessly launch a personal campaign of resistance by dispatching postcards with anti-government slogans. Eventually, their neighbors turn them in; they're arrested by the Gestapo; and put before the People's Court.

 

Otto Quangel, ein einfacher Handwerker, lebt mit seiner Frau Anna im Berlin der 1940er Jahre. Für die politischen und militärischen Entwicklungen interessiert sich das alte Ehepaar nicht sonderlich. Das ändert sich, als ihr einziger Sohn im Frankreichfeldzug fällt. Die beiden unscheinbaren Kleinbürger radikalisieren sich schlagartig und beginnen furchtlos ihren persönlichen Widerstandsfeldzug, indem sie Postkarten mit regimekritischen Parolen verschicken. Doch ihre Nachbarn liefern sie ans Messer; sie werden von der Gestapo verhaftet und vom Volksgerichtshof verurteilt.

Film über die bekannteste Schiffskatastrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts. Um die Aktienkurse seines Unternehmens in die Höhe zu treiben, veranlasst der Präsident der Schifffahrtslinie, Sir Ismay, seinen Kapitän, die Fahrt von London nach New York in Rekordzeit zu bewältigen, ungeachtet der Gefahren durch das mit Eisbergen durchzogene Nordmeer. Während dadurch alle Reisenden in Gefahr schweben, spielen sich an Bord zahlreiche große und kleine Dramen ab. Da ist zum Beispiel die junge Dänin Sigrid Oole, die zu Unrecht zu sagenhaftem Reichtum gelangt ist. Oder Lord und Lady Astor, die sich als geschäftliche Gegenspieler Ismays entpuppen. Weiterhin gibt es noch den deutschen Gelehrten Bergmann, ein Auswandererehepaar und eine kleine Maniküre – sie alle werden sich ungeahnten Situationen gegenüber sehen, und die Katastrophe wird das wahre Gesicht eines jeden zum Vorschein bringen.

 

Not the campy soap opera film with Leonardo, but a rather more gritty German version, which, by the way, seems to have had some story lines stolen directly from it and put into the most recent production by Hollywood.  Not the best film to watch if you're trying to reaffirm your belief in all that is good with human nature, but entertaining, nonetheless. The film itself was banned in Germany during the War, because the scenes of panic and terror were thought to be "too close to home" as Allied planes were slowly making Germany's cities into heaps of rubble.  After the War, it was once more banned -- this time by the victorious Allies -- because of the not-too-subtle suggestion that the British owner's financial interests in having the ship recklessly speed from England directly caused the deaths of 1500 persons on board.  To add to the film's historical bad luck, it should also be added that the film's director was arrested, because he was overheard making derogatory comments about the Wehrmacht.  Having refused to withdraw his comments, he was thrown into prison, where he promptly hanged himself rather than face Gestapo interrogation. Most memorable moment:  after the ship's crew has loaded up all the oh-so-few lifeboats with some of the passengers, the captain shouts down from the bridge to the sailors standing with the remaining passengers, "People!  You have done your duty; now save yourselves, whoever can!" and causes an immediate heartwrenching panic among those who have been left behind on the sinking ship.

 

 

S.O.S. EISBERG (1933) * with switchable English subtitles *

This is the story of four men, who set off to Greenland to rescue an explorer, who was with them on an earlier expedition and who got lost and was assumed to be dead.  However, a piece of jetsam arrives on land and proves that he really is still alive.  So the expedition returns to the scene of the crime, so to speak, and gets into trouble crossing a half-frozen fjord, which carries them out to sea.

 

While all the action of this film takes place within a few hundred feet of sea level, this is definitely a Bergfilm by the master of the genre, Arnold Fanck, in that it shows the struggle of the individual against the relentlessly lethal Nature, which wins more often than not.  Bergfilme are not about wonderful dialogs or intricate plots --- they're about iconic heroes sternly staring into the face of an implicable, oncoming storm.  This is even reflected in the film's music:  wonderfully stirring and fitting the action perfectly, it sounds very much like a cross between an heroic passage in a Richard Strauss symphonic poem and something right out of Triumph of the Will  (and is this not, actually, just that:  A Triumph of the Spirit over adversity?).

 

Leni Riefenstahl, a veteran director of many such movies in the genre, plays an aviatrix in search of her  missing husband.  The cinematography of the icebergs is absolutely spectacular.  The shifts between scenes shot in outdoor sets and those actually filmed in Greenland are seamlessly pieced together.  You won't be able to discern between the two.  The acting, on the other hand, wouldn't get an Oscar, even if susbtantial bribes were made and the judges were deaf and dumb  (my personal favorite:  Ernst Udet, who plays himself, has just found a stranded Leni Riefenstahl on the ice.  No doubt convinced their doom was but days away, she somehow manages not to smear her makeup and when Ernst finds her, screams to him that he should keep flying to search for another explorer.  Udet's response?  "Okay ... see you soon!" ... Excuse me?!?  See you soon?!?  I don't think so!).

 

There is plenty to give cynical viewers something to chuckle over:  explorers, fully clothed, swimming in 32F waters, which would cause lesser supermen to cramp up almost instantly and drown, because the shock of the cold would make muscle control impossible; radiomen trying to reach the stranded explorers and mentioning --- for some God-knows-why reason --- that they haven't heard from the explorers in weeks; crazed and starved members of the crew attacking polar bears, who growl like lions, with spears, hoping to drag their 1000+ pound carcasses through the water to their ice floe to have a dinner of polar steak; the Eskimos arriving in kayaks to save everyone at the last minute, like a cavalry scene from a bad 30s Western ...  However, if you accept the film for what it is ... a symphony of ice and water and brutal Nature in a dark conflict with the human will to survive ... rather than judge it cinematographically, you will not be disappointed.  Those who enjoy National Geographic specials and similar documentaries, will enjoy this the most.

 

 

DER TIGER VON ESCHNAPUR (1938) * with switchable English and French subtitles *

This is the first part of the two-part film based on Thea von Harbou’s novel, “The Hindu Tomb”.  At the center of this complex action film is the dramatic love-triad between Chandra, the Maharaja of Bengal, who lives happily with his bride Sitha, and Sasha, a Russian émigré from Germany, who shows up at the palace and who re-ignites a passion started between himself and Sitha in Paris once upon a time.  Prince Ramagani, who is secretly planning a coup, uses the opportunity to rile up the Maharaja against Sasha and Sitha.  Both flee halfway round the world to Berlin, but are constantly pursued by Chandra, hell bent on revenge.

 

Erster Teil der zweiteiligen Verfilmung von Thea von Harbous Roman "Das indische Grabmal". Im Mittelpunkt des aufwändigen Abenteuerfilms steht ein dramatisches Liebesdreieck: Chandra, der Maharadscha von Eschnapur, lebt glücklich mit seiner Gemahlin Sitha. Als jedoch Sithas ehemaliger Liebhaber Sascha aus Deutschland im Palast auftaucht, gibt die wiedererwachte Leidenschaft zwischen den beiden Anlass für bösartige Intrigen. Prinz Ramagani, der insgeheim einen Staatstreich plant, nutzt die Gelegenheit, um den Maharadscha gegen Sascha und Sitha aufzubringen. Beide fliehen rund um die Welt bis nach Berlin, ständig verfolgt von Chandra und seinem Gefolge.

Peasant Sallah Shabati is a Sephardi Jew from Egpyt. He is more a schemer than a worker, using the former rather than the latter to get what he wants. He would however rather spend his days playing backgammon. For a better life, he and his family - his pregnant wife, their seven children, and his mother - decide to move to Israel into a new housing complex. Upon their arrival in Israel, they find that before they move into their house, they will be temporarily housed in a run down transit camp, that camp which has dirt roads and small huts. They soon learn that the temporary nature of their stay at the camp is less temporary than they had envisioned, as one of their fellow camp members, Mr. Goldstein, has been there for six years. He finds that wherever he goes, Sallah runs into one bureaucratic red tape process after another in his end goal of moving into a nice new house. He eventually learns that he can expedite his move into one of those houses for 1,000 lira, which he does not have and would be difficult to earn as he has no trade, and the government will only issue work they want done. He also tries to deal with those at the neighboring kibbutz, they who have volunteered to orient new immigrants at the camp to Israeli life. Sallah's mentality is contrary to that of the those at the kibbutz, not only the concept of communal ownership of everything and the good of the group as opposed to the individual, but also his traditional Sephardi ways against the kibbutz's modern Israeli ways.

Gibraltar, 1938: Terrorists have infiltrated the British naval base and are sabotaging troop transports to Palestine. Eventually, this dancer, Mercedes, will discover who he really is and will sacrifice herself to protect him.

1910: A small, rural Slovak town is preparing to host a festive ball. The arrival of a military unit, however, turns everything on its head. Some local cavaliers, worried that some of the visiting troops might hit on their fiancees, want to postpone the dance in the last minute. The division's commander, von Rumplay, overrides these concerns and decides the ball shall take place after all. In the town square, however, officers and dancers are surprised by the alarm signal, provided by a certain Misko Marce, an estate servant present at a "private ball" being thrown at the lavish mansion ... in the absence of the home's lawful owners. Festivities interrupted, von Rumplay orders the troops to vacate the town and the local ladies start a wrestling match for the attention of the fleeing meat.

During the final stages of the Russian Civil War, two Red Army men are sent on a reconnaissance mission by their regimental commander to film the White Army fortifications on the Crimean Peninsula. After completing their mission, the engine on their airplane stalls and their forced to land in enemy territory. After a series of misadventures, the two are brought before a Red firing squad to be executed as White spies. Fortunately, their colonel shows up just in time to stop the execution.

As the Pacific War draws to an end, the commandant of the Blood Island prisoner-of-war camp has let it be known that should Japan surrender, he will order the massacre of the entire captive population. When the prisoners hear through underground sources that Japan has indeed surrendered, they mobilise themselves to try to prevent the news reaching the commandant. Colonel Lambert, the authoritarian leader of the prisoners, deems that they must sabotage communications between the camp and the outside world and arm themselves in however makeshift a way in readiness for a final showdown. Lambert's unilateral assumption of military authority is not universally welcomed, as other prisoners including Piet van Elst, former governor Cyril Beattie and priest Paul Anjou chafe against his quasi-dictatorial personality, obstinacy and refusal to listen to any views other than his own. Lambert is forced continually to justify his at times apparently illogical and counter-productive decisions. Matters are not helped by the growing suspicion that the camp harbours a collaborator in its midst. Van Elst is given the task of chief saboteur, while Anjou passes messages and instructions to the captives via coded sermons. When the endgame becomes inevitable, the prisoners rise up against their captors in a bloody insurrection, feeling that they have nothing left to lose and the survival of a few is better than the alternative. When Allied relief planes finally arrive they find a mere handful of survivors on either side.
