PEOPLE OF THE MOUNTAINS (Emberek a havason) (1942) * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

István Szöts Writers: József Nyirö (short stories), István Szöts Stars: Alice Szellay, János Görbe, Péterke Ferency

The film follows a woodcutter and his family who are forced from their idyllic Transylvanian mountain home following the opening of a new lumber mill nearby. Despite being enticed into working for the very company that ejected them, the family quickly begins to struggle and soon face the tragic prospect of leaving their ancestral lands for good. Based on a series of short stories, the film earned high praise at the 1942 Venice film festival, but was denied a certificate for distribution within Germany, because Joseph Goebbels considered its message to be "too Catholic". The movie was shot on location and with mostly unknown actors to keep costs low. Since Transylvania had been occupied by Hungary since the Second Vienna Award of 1940, little expense and effort was involved in using the area's resources to complete the film.
