Gradually, the three daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Arvik are coming to a marriageable age, which is why Mother Arvik is already giving a lot of thought to who should be the bridegroom for each. She takes little consideration, however, of what the girls want in a husband. For example, her daughter Marna would like to marry the charming painter Jorgensen … Mrs. Arvik, however, has already chosen the shipowner Karstens for her. Captain Tonning is “allocated” to Alberta; leaving only Helena, for which Mother Arvik can’t find a proper candidate.

Allmählich kommen die drei Töchter von Herrn und Frau Arvik ins heiratsfähige Alter, weshalb Mutter Arvik sich schon viele Gedanken macht, wer als Bräutigam für jedes Mädchen in Frage kommt. Auf die Wünsche der jungen Frauen nimmt sie dabei wenig Rücksicht. Tochter Marna zum Beispiel würde gerne den charmanten Maler Jörgensen heiraten – Frau Arvik aber hat den Reeder Karstens für sie vorgesehen. Alberta bekommt den Kapitän Tonning "zugeteilt", nur für Helene lässt sich einfach kein richtiger Kandidat finden.
