Главный герой, Евгений Павлович Адамов — генерал царской армии, профессор Военно-юридической академии. В 1918 году его арестовывают, но отпускают, потому что в 1905 году он, будучи прокурором, отказался быть обвинителем в процессе революционных матросов. Квартира Адамова занята другими людьми. Поскитавшись до вечера по Петрограду, он возвращается в тюрьму. Комендант тюрьмы из жалости пускает его переночевать, а потом назначает на должность прачки.  Через некоторое время Адамова замечают и зовут послужить делу революции по специальности. 

The protagonist in this story is Eugene Pavlovich Adamov, a General in the czarist army and a professor at the Military Academy of Law.  In 1918, he is arrested by the revolutionaries, but is subsequently released, because, as a prosecutor, he refused to take part in trials against mutinous sailors in 1905.  In the meantime, however, his apartment has been occupied by squatters.  Wandering around Petrograd, he finally returns to the prison where he was held.  Out of pity, the commandant of the prison allows him to sleep there and then appoints him to handle the prison laundry.  After a while, notice is taken of Adamov and he’s called upon to serve the revolution in his former specialty.
