LONDON BLACKOUT MURDERS (1943): During the dark days of World War II, young Mary Tillet is bombed out of her home and forced to seek lodgings upstairs at a tobacconist's. Her kindly, but mysterious, landlord, Jack Rawlings, attempts to transform the empty, web-strewn apartment into a home. After reading newspaper accounts of the "London Blackout Murders," Mary is plagued by dread. Is her landlord a hero, or a sinister assassin? Taken as a period piece, the movie is a gem that briskly portrays the effects of wartime shortages, women in the workplace, and the moral ambiguity inherent in life-or-death situations.
LIVING DANGEROUSLY (1936): When Doctor Stanley Norton finds his partner, Doctor Henry Pryor, has been illegally selling drugs to addicts, he dissolves the partnership. Seeking revenge, Pryor accuses Norton of misconduct with Pryor's wife, Helen. The case is reviewed before the General Medical Council and Norton is struck off the register on the false testimony of Vera Kennedy, Pryor's mistress. The case discloses that Norton and Helen love each other and it also publicly reveals Pryor's traffic in drugs and he is sentenced to two years in prison. Helen and Norton migrate to the state of Montana and after dreary years of struggle, under another name, achieves success. He is a famous Park Avenue heart specialist when Pryor, embittered, broken and bent on revenge, gets into Norton's home by a ruse. His game is blackmail and his weapon the fact that Helen is still his lawful wife.
A Spanish sea captain is sent to clean out Evil Island, from where pirate bands are raiding Spanish shipping under the leadership of a pirate named Moloch.
Featuring sweeping, majestic vistas of the Italian landscape, and using many of the locations where Garibaldi’s campaign took place as his Camicie rosse (Red shirts) marched across Sicily, sailed over the Strait of Messina into Calabria, then headed north through Campania (where the strategic Battle of Volturno took place) and onto Naples (where King Francis II ruled), Rossellini’s drama is as as much a spectacular visual feast as it is an important historical account of a defining moment in Italian history – the unification of the country. It also serves as a powerful David and Goliath parable in which a band of ill-equipped, untrained volunteers (mainly poor farmers and workers) stood up against the might of a powerful army – and won!
Young Cedric Errol lives with his widowed mother in New York City. Cedric's late father was a son of the Earl of Dorincourt, but the Earl had objected strongly to his son's marriage, and thus has long been estranged from Cedric and his mother. But when the Earl's only surviving son dies in a riding accident, Cedric suddenly becomes Lord Fauntleroy, the Earl's heir. Cedric and his mother travel to England, where they must overcome the Earl's hard feelings about the past, as well as some unexpected obstacles.
THE THICK-WALLED ROOM (1953): Among the first Japanese films to deal directly with the scars of World War II, this drama about a group of rank-and-file Japanese soldiers jailed for crimes against humanity was adapted from the diaries of real prisoners. Because of the inflammatory content, the film was shelved by the studio for three years before being released.
THE LADY AND THE LUMBERJACK (1935): He's a rough and tough lumberjack, head of the crew, and defender of the mountain they take the trees off from the other crew. She's a local woman, very pretty and very ladylike. Of course, they fall in love, but his crew is composed of comic actors, and here comes the new guy, appointed by the head office, to take over the operation....
THE UNDESIREABLE (1915): Betty, a young woman living in the country, is told by her dying father that he is really her uncle and raised her as his own when her mother was sent to prison for killing her husband. Alone and not knowing her mother's fate, Betty travels to the city in search of work. There she finds employment as a maid in the house of a wealthy couple and their dashing son, Nick, with whom she falls in love. When Betty is fired from her position after being unjustly accused of theft and escorted to her home village, an ironic twist of fate propels the story forward with the sudden appearance of her mother - presumed dead, but recently released from prison - on a quest of her own to find her daughter.
DEADLY GASES (1916): A scientist develops a powder that he believes will have the effect of distorting reality for those who take it. To test its effect tries it out on his assistant, a dog, himself and two young couples.
Western Galicia, in the middle of the 19th Century: Baruch, the son of an Orthodox rabbi, wants to become an actor. Against the wishes of his father, he leaves the Polish shtetl he grew up in and joins a wandering troupe of actors. Archduchess Elisabeth Theresia favors the young man and, secretly in love with him, commissions a role for him at the Wiener Burgtheater. It's there that Baruch becomes a celebrated star on the stage. His father, however, still rejects the son's chosen path in life. It's only after he sees Baruch in a performance of Don Carlos, that he changes his mind.

In the 1980s, Reza finds his beloved Iran engulfed by war with Iraq. Though he has a child on the way, he decides to do his duty and join in the fighting to defend his country. While he is away, his wife dies in childbirth, and Reza himself is captured as a prisoner of war. A woman named Shokooh finds the child, now ostensibly an orphan, and raises her as her own. Years later, Reza returns home determined to find his daughter and take up the mantle of the father she has never known.

In each of these Decameronesque tales, the women take charge; but not always happily.
Song of the Great Rivers, also known as "Unity" or "Seven Rivers" is a documentary film by Dutch director Joris Ivens for the East German DEFA Studio. He decided to make the film after spending several years in the DDR. An overtly propaganda production extolling socialist methods and achievements it is, at the same time, witheringly critical of Capitalism and capitalist countries. Its message is for workers of the world to choose between fun holidays on the Black Sea and strikes and lockouts in the UK or France. Between brotherly inter-racial support and the Klu Klux Klan. Between peace and war. In cinematic terms, it's an interesting reminder of the Cold War and of how the world worked, at least according to the Soviets, a couple of generations back. Musically though the film is of great interest, boasting an original score by Dmitri Shostakovich and a title song with words of Bertolt Brecht, sung by Paul Robeson episodically through the film.

As scientists discuss the merits of prolonging life at Hamburg′s congress centre, a dangerous disease is spreading and threatens the city. Everybody who gets infected becomes mad and finally dies. The authorities panic and react to the disease by declaring a useless state of emergency. Furthermore, the vaccination that is handed out in large amounts does seem to stabilize the virus instead of destroying it. A small group of infected people manages to escape from quarantine and flee to a small farm in the Bavarian hills to wait for the epidemic to end.

A theater troupe's young, energetic leader has secured an old theater in which to mount his new production. The theater's elderly caretaker, however, urges the group to leave at once. After performing a Charleston and a sexy jazz-modern dance number, the crew is startled by the applause of a tuxedo-clad man in the audience, the titular vampire, who approaches the troupe and entrances its lead dancer, Julia. After wandering alone into the depths of the theater, Julia encounters the vampire, who bites her and takes her to his crypt, where his bouffanted brides are chained to a wall and giggle and hiss at one another.
When martial law is declared in Tsarist Russia, all Jews are restricted to their villages in the Pale of Settlement (with the exception of those in military service). The authorities are unsympathetic to Marya, who desperately wants to travel to St. Petersburg to see her dying father. Marya learns that a special card, called "the yellow ticket", is issued to prostitutes and allows them to travel freely. Marya manages to get a yellow ticket. In St. Petersburg, Baron Andrei, a corrupt police official, prevents his lecherous nephew, Captain Nikolai, from forcing himself on Marya. She later meets Julian, a British journalist, and tells him about injustices the government has kept him from learning about, including the yellow ticket. When Julian's articles are published, Andrei, a womanizer, guesses that Marya has been giving him this information.

Our story begins on a busy street where a well-dressed young man Ferdi is strolling along the avenue, and when he stops to light a cigarette in front of a shop, a young woman leaving the shop drops a few packages. Ferdi assists her in picking up her parcels and engages her in a conversation. While strolling with her down the street, Ferdi abruptly snatches the young lady's purse. He eludes the young lady and the people pursuing him by running through a courtyard. Ferdi takes the money out of the purse, discards the purse and leaves in a taxi that was waiting for him. At the same time, Erni Gottlinger, the daughter of a wealthy contractor, is celebrating in a café with a group of her admirers; and her father, Mr. Gottlinger, is entertaining a lady friend in his office at the construction site. That evening, the notorious Café Electric, a gathering place for the lower elements of society, is crowded with prostitutes and pimps. Among the patrons is Ferdi. Also in the café is Erni who is frolicking with a group of her admirers. Ferdi, ever alert for an easy mark, strolls over to the table and asks her to dance.
The story begins with the fact that the world is dead already. The water is coming very fast and nothing can be done to stop it. So the post-Soviet people are spending their last days hiding and going mad. The main character is losing his mind and trying to realize what is happening with the world. He finds out that some children have been left stuck in a school, that is sinking fast in the flood waters. We can see people in boats, on furniture, and there's no sun at all. He wants to do something good before he dies. He can't realize, that most people have already lost their humanity and do not care about children or anybody anymore.

Success has gone to the head of the rich noodle manufacturer, Julius Lampe: He thinks he's better than everyone else. And to make matters worse, a prince has announced that he will takes Lampe's pasta products with him on an expedition to Africa! Lampe's friend Finke has been annoyed by Julius' haughty attitude for a long time now and wants to teach him a lesson: it's 01 April! Finke officially announces the prince's arrival and everyone is going nuts getting everything in royal order. Even the newspapers are announcing the high visit. But Finke's nerves can't stand the strain and he admits having played an April Fool's joke on Lampe. To save the manufacturer's reputation, the business traveler Muller is convinced to play the part of the alleged prince. But when a real prince shows up, he is thought to be the acting business traveler and is treated like scum.
Dem reichen Nudelfabrikanten Julius Lampe ist sein Erfolg zu Kopf gestiegen: Er hält sich für etwas Besseres. Zu allem Überfluss kündigt sich auch noch ein Prinz an, der Lampes Nudelerzeugnisse auf eine Afrikaexpedition mitnehmen will. Freund Finke ärgert sich schon lange über des Fabrikanten Angeberei und will ihm einen Denkzettel verpassen – es ist der 1. April! Finke lässt den Prinzen offiziell ankündigen, und das ganze Haus Lampe steht Kopf. Selbst die Zeitung annonciert den hohen Besuch. Doch Finkes Nerven sind zu schwach für den ganzen Trubel, er gesteht seinen Aprilscherz ein. Um das Ansehen des Hauses zu retten, wird nun der Geschäftsreisende Müller überredet, als Prinz aufzutreten. Als der Prinz kommt, ist er der echte, wird aber für den falschen gehalten und von der Familie Lampe als vermeintlicher Müller wenig freundlich behandelt.
Seinen Gegnern ist der legendäre Basler Arzt Paracelsus ein Dorn im Auge. Denn er folgt nicht den Lehren der Fakultäten, er stellt seine ganz persönlichen Theorien von der Heilkunde auf. Er sieht sich als Arzt des Volkes und sein Grundsatz lautet: "Der höchste Grund der Arznei ist die Liebe." Als es Paracelsus gelingt, den von allen Ärzten aufgegebenen Buchhändler Froben zu heilen, ist seine Lehre plötzlich in aller Munde. Paracelsus, considering when it was made (1943) and under what conditions, is a remarkably interesting film, though full of not especially well disguised propaganda. It's the story of Paracelsus, the 16th-century Swiss healer whose reputation took on a new vogue in Nazi Germany. Nazi writers and intellectuals began to attribute all sorts of Nazi ideals to the mystic healer, who had been ridiculed and oppressed for choosing to write in German instead of Latin and who had challenged the authority and practices of his medieval colleagues. With the exception of Werner Krauss, the acting is operatic. The screenplay is full of noble opinions about the German character and its ability to triumph over the ignorance of its enemies. The physical production, however, is astonishingly handsome. In addition, the movie contains one of Pabst's most magical scenes, in which Death, in the person of a juggler, enters a town in the midst of a plague and invites the citizens to join him in a celebratory dance.

Gräfin Alexandra betritt ebenfall das Lokal, wird vom Stifter des Preises, Graf Meredith, für ein Modell gehalten und behelligt. Aus dieser peinlichen Lage errettet sie Viktor. Die beiden Männer beleidigen sich gegenseitig, und Viktor verliert seinen Preis.
Film version of the operatta by Emmerich Kalman: Victor has won 10 000 Mark with his ceiling painting. In the local pub, he celebrates his triumph. Countess Alexandra happens to drop into the pub, too and is thought to be a model by the sponsor of the prize, Count Meredith. Victor soon has to save her from an embarassing misunderstanding. The two men insult each other and Victor loses his prize.

"The Red Cat" is a seedy dive. The rich American, Jefferson, who shows up there one day with his family and who recently became the proud owner of the famous Halifax emerald, particularly attracts the attention of the patrons of the "Cat". One of them approaches the Americans disguised as a marquis, but he has not reckoned with Jefferson's daughter, Jessie.
DAS GEHEIMNIS DER ROTEN KATZE (1949):
André ist Schauspieler, aber leider ohne Anstellung. Um etwas Geld zu verdienen, mimt er in der Pariser Kneipe “Die Rote Katze” zur Unterhaltung der Touristen einen finsteren Bandenchef. Dabei lernt er Gloria, die hübsche Tochter des amerikanischen Juwelenhändlers Jefferson, kennen. Glorias Vater hat gerade den berühmten “Halifax”-Brillanten erworben, auf den es der Gauner Pitou abgesehen hat. Als das teure Schmuckstück verschwindet, gerät der arme André in Verdacht. Der begnadete Schauspieler muss in einige Masken schlüpfen und viele Verwicklungen überstehen, um den wahren Täter zu finden.
André is an actor, but, like most actors, he's unemployed. Since he has to earn a living, he works at "The Red Cat", entertaining tourists as a sinister gang leader. It's there that he gets to know Gloria, the beautiful daughter of the American jeweler, Jefferson. Gloria's father has just acquired the famous "Halifax Diamond", which the crook Pitou intends to steal. When the expensive gem disappears, André ends up being the top suspect in the theft of the diamond. The gifted actor thus has to play a number of roles and go through many complications to find the real culprit.
'I Get Out and You Stay Here' is a German screwball comedy from 1931. The year is significant. At this point, Germany has recovered (somewhat) from the crippling economic problems of the 1920s that gave German filmgoers nothing to laugh about, but Hitler is still not yet in charge ... and not yet politically dominant enough to infect the proceedings of this film. Based on what we see here, Berlin in 1931 was a pretty nice place to live, and (for all I know) perhaps it was ... at least for people with a few Deutschemarks. The very attractive (and very Aryan) actress Camilla Horn plays the floor model in a very swank boutique in Unter den Linden, Mitte Berlin. Her job enables her to wear beautiful gowns and expensive furs, but she isn't paid much. She's engaged to a handsome young driving instructor (Hans Brausewetter), and it's understood that they'll marry as soon as they get a bit of money. But no Pfennigs are on the horizon. Camilla's employer (Margo Lion) locates a rich customer: a wealthy baron, very well played by Theodor Loos. Camilla's job requires her to be squired about at posh nightclubs and restaurants by the baron and other rich men, while wearing her employer's expensive outfits, in the hope of making some sales. Naturally, this leaves poor Hans at home all alone with his engine idling, adjusting his stick shift. Of course, Hans jumps to conclusions about Camilla's stage-door Johanns. But German sex farces (such as they were in the 1930s) were actually somewhat prudish, so there's never any doubt that Camilla is remaining chaste. Even with her boyfriend, she follows a Hans-off policy.
Picture it: Sicily, 1860! The populace of the island, suffering harsh repression at the hands of the Bourbons, await the arrival of Garibaldi, who is fighting for a unified Italy. The picciotto Carmeliddo is sent by his fellow citizens to meet Colonel Carini on the Italian mainland. Carmeliddo must convince the colonel, a veteran of the 1848 uprising in Sicily, to return to the island with Garibaldi to assist the rebels, who are on the verge of being exterminated.

Liselott, a young headhunter, decides to take a little adventure: she swipes her boss' car, gets stopped by the cops, and since she has no driver's license, she runs away from the cops and sneaks into an apartment building, where she meets three young men, who don't have a high opinion of work and prefer to spend their lives as artists. Liselott, for some reason, thinks she has to put things in order there. She's mistaken for the property owner, Marion Flemming. Liselott seizes the opportunity and, disguised as Marion, finds a radical means to make the artists go to work.
Aristides Nessel kann zufrieden sein, denn die Börsennotierungen seiner Porzellanfabrik sind erstklassig. Aristides Nessel can be satisfied, that his porcelain factory's stocks are doing very well on the stock market. Nessel attributes this success to the prophecies of a fortune teller, on whose ramblings he relies much more than on the facts before his eyes. And one of those important facts is that his hardworking secretary, Anna Busch, is the one who's keeping the business running successfully. But since that's something the fortune teller hasn't revealed to him, Nessel sees neither this nor Anna's being in love with him. Instead, he's waiting to meet the fiancee the fortune teller's told him about; and it'll just happen to be the next woman he literally 'runs into'.

Stefan is the son of the owner of a Bavarian steamship concern, which plies the Danube. During a trip to Budapest, he falls in love with the beautiful Etelka, who, unbeknownst to Stefan, is the daughter of his father's Hungarian competitor. By chance, they lose sight of each other; but as Stefan's father enters into negotiations with Etelka's father about a merger of the two companies, the children find each other once again.

After the death of his father, Hans takes over the local inn and falls in love with Hanne, a neighbor's daughter. Hanne's bitchy mother, however, signed a promissory note with the rich cattle baron Seefeld, so she could use this as leverage to get her daughter to marry him. Hans discovers the fraud and prevents the wedding at the last minute.

Albert and his sister Lene live with their aunt. One day, they discover that the street car line will open a new track, which will go through the land, on which their aunt has a house. In expectation of a high buying price for her property, the aunt goes on a spending spree, only to find out that the new line will not be laid on her property after all.
Cardinal Massaia, about to return to Abyssinia, tries to get the support of the government of Piedmont for the work he is doing in Africa. However, as much as the Count of Cavour is interested in Massaia and his activities, Piedmont's cabinet can't be bothered. Thus, the intrepid missionary sets out on his own, trusting in Divine Providence. Upon arrival, he is sincerely welcomed by King Menelik, who allows Massaia to organize a mission and perform charitable work throughout all of Ethiopia. Abuna Athanasius, head of the Coptic Church in the region, does all he can to hinder the activities of the Catholic missionary and to have the man expelled. Failing to convince the king of the need to get rid of Messaia, Abuna causes a schism between the ruler and the warring tribes, who pay fealty to him. Rebellion breaks out and Massaia, aware that he's the cause of the conflict, decides to leave and puts a young, native priest he consecrated in charge of the charitable work still to be done.

A fight breaks out between Eveline and the violin virtuoso Joachim, concerning the publishing of some letters. At a sailboat party the next day, Georg, who is in love with Eveline, notices how she has mixed some powder into Joachim's drink. A short time later, Joachim is dead: poisoned. All the members of the party are under suspicion of murder. In order to protect Eveline, Georg gives a false confession. But it turns out that Eveline only mixed a sleeping powder into Joachim's drink, so as to steal the letters from his jacket pocket.

Lieutenant Colonel von Warp and Lieutenant von Haacken fish two women out of the water during a boating trip, whose boat has tipped over: Pauline and Therese. Haacken and Pauline split after a short affair; but Warp and Therese fall deeply in love with one another. Warp constantly visit's the flower shop belonging to Therese's uncle, in order to buy out his stock and so as to see her again. He's even prepared to give up his officer's career for her. But then he finds out about an earlier adventure Therese had with a regiment's comrade and he withdraws greatly hurt.

This film is especially noteworthy for its portrayal of the Reichshauptstadt in all its glory. Only six weeks after the film's premiere, Berlin experienced the first of its heavy bombing raids, which were to continue regularly until War's end. The young photographer Renate takes some pictures of Italian fliers during an emergency landing. The photos are excellent. And because they are, the publicist Rolf gets to know her through the photos and falls in love with her on the spot. Renate takes off for Berlin, but she's only able to just enter the field of press photography. When she sees Rolf once more, she admits her love for him, but the two wish to be free and pursue their careers with no entanglements. There are some fights, which lead to their splitting up; but eventually, they both try to find one another again.

In that period of time, it should be abundantly clear whether they belong together or not.

The filming of A MAN BELONGS TO THE HOUSE took place in the Schonbrunn Studio and in Zell am See, which not only corresponded to the required scenery for the film, but also because of the expectation that bombing raids and acts of war would be much less likely to occur there.

André is an actor, but, like most actors, he's unemployed. Since he has to earn a living, he works at "The Red Cat", entertaining tourists as a sinister gang leader. It's there that he gets to know Gloria, the beautiful daughter of the American jeweler, Jefferson. Gloria's father has just acquired the famous "Halifax Diamond", which the crook Pitou intends to steal. When the expensive gem disappears, André ends up being the top suspect in the theft of the diamond. The gifted actor thus has to play a number of roles and go through many complications to find the real culprit.
A theft has taken place in one of the apartments of an old, converted mansion in Rome. Commissioner Ingravalle of CID had just started an investigation into the robbery, when in the same building, in the very next apartment, a murder is discovered. The victim is Liliana Banducci, a woman still quite young and attractive, but who, for some reason, recently re-wrote her will. Now the commissioner has two crimes to solve and that's not going to be easy, because the clues are disjointed and fragmentary.
While not meant to be comical in any way, this very good, but dated, film, causes more than a few laughs with its stereotypical portrayal of overdramatic Italians; its lighthearted handling of the interrogation of everyone from suspects to male hustlers; and over-the-top melodramatic performances on the part of all the actors/actresses.

Occupied by the Allies in 1920 in fulfillment of the conditions laid out in the Treaty of Versailles, the residents of the Saarland were given the opportunity via a 1935 plebiscite to either rejoin Germany or continue to be administered by France. 90.8% of the region's residents chose to rejoin Germany.

Mixed with historical information, this book -- like all his works -- is especially worthwhile for those who like oral histories of important events. Some shocking photos.
1971 book printed in Communist Poland has 140+ pages of photos and text comparing what Poland's capital city looked like in 1945 upon its "liberation" and how those same places looked at the time the book was published. A now-and-then kind of photobook, which would be of great interest to those with historical interest or roots in the country.
This 325-paged book with many photos about the destruction of Poland's capital, along with many concerning its reconstruction over the next two decades after War's end, is, unfortunately, written in French, as it is the French-language version of a Polish book on the subject. Nonetheless, one need not understand French to understand the book's compelling photos. Well worth the purchase even if you can't figure out the captions. Lots of before-and-after photos.
