Taking place shortly after the reunification of West and East Germany, the film is about the disintegrating relationship between Jockel, a political activist, and Stefan, a heroin junkie, and their involvement with bisexual Micha. A second plot line is concerned with Micha’s young son, Sascha, and his life in a rundown world of drugs and poverty. He is fascinated with creepy, exhibitionist puppeteer, Firlefanz, whose grotesque puppets enact a gay fairy tale paralleling the relationship of Stefan and Jockel. Central to the disintegration of these characters is the drug dealer Ingolf, who ‘pulls their strings’ with heroin, instead of puppet wires.

Sicily, the late 1930s. Because of difficult financial times, Aclà Rizzuto, an eleven-year-old boy, is put to work as a miner where his father Michele and his older brothers Calogero and Pino also work. The employment contract gives 500 lire to the family, guaranteeing Aclà's work for the next eight years. If he runs away, the family is required to return the money. Life in the mines is terrible: you work in the bowels of the earth, without clothes due to the heat and the boys hired like Aclà have to carry twenty-five kilo baskets. The work environment, totally made up of males, is decidedly promiscuous: the workers all sleep together and in the absence of anything else they resort to homosexuality, the need to be naked only makes things worse. The climate of violence causes many kids to run away and Aclà is not immune to this temptation: in fact, at a certain point, he suddenly returns home (where he usually is only on weekends) and is unfavorably received by his mother who accuses him of wanting the ruin of the family.

Die beiden Jungen machen sich auf die Suche nach ihr. Die Sippe der „Fischer“ leidet unter einem Ungeheuer, das Opfergaben von ihnen fordert. Falke und Rabenfeder legen sich auf die Lauer. Tatsächlich können sie das vermeintliche Ungeheuer fangen.

One day, the Devil (named Flaming Foot here) appears before the puppeteer and inventor Hans Rockle and offers him a deal: Rockle will get magic powers to create whatever he wants; but he cannot profit from his inventions and if he fails to create something in seven times seven hours (that's 49 hours to us) from his last invention, the Devil will get his soul. For the seamstress Luisa, Rockle creates a needle which does all the stitching. For Jacob, he makes a flute which can bring the farmers desperately needed rain. As per their contract, the Devil can claim any of Rockle's inventions to give to his evil grandmother as a gift. But each time the Devil seizes an invention, he has to give it back, because he cannot control the inventor's magic.

Although the Indians were assured their lands adjacent to the Black Hills by treaty, the Whites want to expel them. Meanwhile, gold has been discovered there and the unscrupulous settler, Red Fox, demands of Mattotaupa, chief of the Bears Clan belonging to the Dakota tribe, to reveal to him the location of a cave with gold deposits. Mattotaupa refuses and is stabbed to death by Red Fox in the presence of his son, Tokei-ihto. Lieutenant Roach orders Tokei-ihto to Fort Smith in order to negotiate. The son of the slain chief suspects that the Whites are planning an ambush, a fear that is confirmed when he encounters Red Fox there.
Im Jahre 1874 wird der Indianer Mattotaupa in einer Blockhütte von dem weißen Verbrecher Red Fox ermordet, da er das Versteck des Goldenen der Indianer nicht verraten wird. Dieser Mord wird von seinem Sohn Tokei-ihto mit angesehen. Als Kriegshäuptling der Bärenbande vom Stamme der Oglala versetzt Tokei-ihto die Weißen durch Überfälle in ständige Unruhen und sprengt das Fort, das an dem Platz steht, an welchem sein Vater getötet wurde, in die Luft. Zwei Jahre nach dem Mord wird Tokei-ihto zu einer Friedenskonferenz in das wieder aufgebaute Fort eingeladen. Durch Verrat wird er verhaftet und über Monate in einem Keller gefangen gehalten. Nach seiner Freilassung schließt Tokei-ihto, die Reservation mit der Bärenbande zu verlassen und nach Kanada zu ziehen. Der Weg dorthin ist aber sehr beschwerlich. Es muss nicht nur der Missouri überquert werden, sondern auch feindliche Indianer getrotzt werden. Doch die schlimmste Gefahr folgt der Bärenbande, der Mörder Mattotaupas, der es auf Tokei-ihto abgesehen hat.
In the latter half of the 19th century, gold is discovered in the Black Hills, an area which has already been allocated to the Dakota Indians as a winter reservation in a treaty. Nevertheless, gold diggers, profiteers and adventurers flock to the region. Among them is the hard-hearted land speculator Bludgeon, who tries to expel the Indians using brutal methods, like slaughtering entire herds of buffalo. The Dakotas take their revenge by attacking a Union Pacific train. While Chief Farsighted Falcon and his men are out hunting, Bludgeon and his gang massacre the Indian village. The Dakota warriors retaliate and soon the gold diggers' town becomes the scene of a giant battle.
1875. Eine friedliche Begegnung zwischen dem Dakota-Indianerhäuptling Weitspähender Falke und zwei Goldsuchern in den Black Hills, einem Vorgebirge der Rocky Mountains. Dabei sagt der Häuptling die Invasion weiterer Goldsucher voraus. In der darauffolgenden Ratsversammlung spaltet sich der Indianerstamm. Ein Teil will in ein Indianerreservat ziehen, die Gruppe um Weitspähenden Falken hingegen bleibt in ihrem Gebiet. Während die nächsten Goldsucher bereits mit der Eisenbahn anrollen, findet Falke eine Herde abgeschossener Büffel. Kurz entschlossen überfällt er den Eisenbahnzug der Union Pacific, muss sich aber zurückziehen. In dem Zug befindet sich auch der Geschäftsmann Bludgeon, mit dem Falke eine persönliche Feindschaft pflegt. Bludgeon behauptet, in Besitz des Bodens mit den Goldvorkommen zu sein und verkauft Parzellen an Neuankömmlinge und Armeeoffiziere. Einheimische Goldsucher lässt er vertreiben. Als dabei ein Goldsucher und drei seiner Leute umkommen, gibt er die Schuld den Indianern. Er hetzt die Bewohner der Stadt Tanglewood auf, die Indianer in ihrem Dorf anzugreifen und zu töten. In Unkenntnis der Spaltung des Stammes treffen sie damit nur den Teil, welcher ins Reservat ziehen wollte. Falke überfällt danach Tanglewood und brennt die Stadt nieder.

Isoliert aufgewachsen, ist Ichthyander inzwischen zum Mann herangewachsen und verliebt sich in das Fischermädchen Guttiere. Doch ein brutaler Geschäftsmann will den Seeteufel einfangen und als Perlentaucher für sich arbeiten lassen. Das gelingt ihm mithilfe von Fischern, die ihn mit einem Netz einfangen. Bei ihnen hatte er sich nicht beliebt gemacht, als er oft seine „Meeresfreunde“ unter Wasser aus ihren Netzen befreit hatte, indem er die Netze mit seinem Messer aufschlitzte.

The first Italian contribution is "Avarice and Anger" concerning a well-to-do real estate agent and his frowzy wife, both uncompromisingly selfish in love and economics; the second Italian entry, "Envy", directed by Roberto Rossellini, from a story by Colette, is a glimpse into the newly-married life of an aging artist and his young wife, whom he treats as a chattel and she, consumed by the envy of his talent, friends and even his cat, tries to do away with the cat; "Pride" is about a couple of down-at-the-heels aristocrats trying to keep up pretenses in the face of utter poverty; "Lust" shows the devastating effects of careless adult behavior on an impressionable child; "Sloth" shows the powers above deciding that life on earth is moving at a too-fast pace and they send an emissary to slow things down, while "Gluttony" is a burlesque piece that the reviewers of the day called in bad taste.

In their small hometown, because of limited opportunities, three young girls have no opportunity to complete their high school education and want very much to continue on with their education. The only way of taking their final exams is for them to go to a prestegious high school in Stralsund. Brodersen is the director of the school, which is located in a Cistercian monastery, and believes that graduation should in principle be reserved for men; yet, he gives the girls a chance. His decision is justified, as it turns out that the boys and girls develop into good comrades and help each other out in any emergency. Shortly before the final exams are to take place, the exam questions are found in the girls' room, but another student, Knud Sengebusch, takes the blame for the find, even though he has nothing to do with it. The reason? He's secretly in love with one of the girls.
In ihrer kleinen Heimatstadt haben drei junge Mädchen keine Möglichkeit ihr Abitur abzulegen, und das, obwohl sie später einmal so gerne studieren würden. Ihre einzige Möglichkeit, die Reifeprüfung zu erlangen, besteht für sie darin, auf das altehrwürdige Gymnasium in Stralsund zu gehen. Brodersen, der Direktor der Schule, die sich in einem Zisterzienserkloster befindet, ist zwar der Ansicht, dass die Reifeprüfung grundsätzlich den Männern vorbehalten bleiben sollte, aber trotzdem gibt er den Mädchen eine Chance. Seine Entscheidung wird gerechtfertigt, als sich zeigt, dass Jungs und Mädchen gute "Kameraden" werden und einander in jeder Notlage beistehen. Als vor einer wichtigen Prüfung ein paar Schüler die Tochter des Hausmeisters überreden, das Lehrerzimmer nach den Klausurfragen zu durchsuchen und das Mädchen erwischt wird, nimmt der Abiturient Knud Sengebusch die Schuld auf sich – obwohl er nichts mit der Sache zu tun hat. Der Grund für sein Verhalten ist seine heimliche Liebe zu der Mitschülerin Elfriede, die er mit seiner Falschaussage decken will. Elfriede hegt indes eine schwärmerische Liebe zu ihrem Lehrer Dr. Kerner, der ihre Gefühle wohl erkannt hat, sich aber gleichwohl scheut, ein Verhältnis mit einer Schülerin anzufangen.

Since doing so, she has led a modest, but satisfying life. Suddenly, one day, Klaus arrives.
