Der wegen unter Alkohol begangenen Totschlags verurteilte, aber sonst unbescholtene Kent wird in ein überfülltes Gefängnis gesteckt, wo man unfähig ist, mit den Insassen angemessen umzugehen. Dort trifft er auf alte „Knastologen“ wie Morgan und seinen hartgesottenen Kumpan Butch. Das System aber bestraft alle gleich, bringt sie gegeneinander auf und erreicht damit nur das Schlimmste: es kommt zu einem lange geplanten Ausbruchsversuch der Häftlinge, bei dem es nicht ohne Todesopfer abgehen kann. 

Sentenced for manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol, but otherwise innocent, Kent is placed in an overcrowded prison, where one is unable to deal adequately with the prison population.  It is there that he meets “Knastologen” and his hard-nosed sidekick Butch.  The system punishes all equally and brings all kinds of criminals together, which leads to the worst:  there is going to be a long-planned breakout attempt by the prisoners, during which some of them are going to die.
