Gustav Künnemann möchte einmal seinem eintönigen Leben und seiner langweiligen Ehe entkommen. Die Gelegenheit bietet sich ihm, als die Frau des Fabrikbesitzers Hachfeld, die an diesem Tag Geburtstag hat, beschließt, einem Unbekannten eine Freude zu machen, und einen Hundertmarkschein aus dem Zugfenster wirft. Künnemann findet den Schein, kleidet sich elegant ein und macht sich auf zu einem kleinen Abenteuer mit dem feschen Gretchen auf dem am selben Tag stattfindenden Sommerfest. Dort gerät er in die Fänge eines Gaunerpärchens, das ihn ausrauben will. Es kommt zu Diebstahl, Schlägerei und falschen Verdächtigungen. Künnemann kommt aus der Sache nur raus, weil Hachfeld und seine Frau, die auch auf dem Fest sind, seine Geschichte mit dem Hundertmarkschein bestätigen.  

Gustav Kunnemann would like to escape his monotonous life and his boring marriage.  He gets his opportunity when the wife of the factory owner Hachfeld, whose birthday it is today, decides to spread her joy and throws an hundred Mark note out of the train window.  Kunnemann finds the note; gets all dressed up and goes on a little adventure with pretty Gretchen to a summer festival taking place that very day.  There, he falls into the clutches of an evil couple, who wish to rob him.  There’s theft, beatings, and false accusations.  Kunnemann is only able to get out with his skin, because Hachfeld and his wife, who happen to be at the festival, confirm his story about the hundred Mark banknote.
