In einem Berliner Hinterhaus gibt es pausenlos Krach unter den Mietern, denn es werden ständig Kohlen aus dem Keller gestohlen. Besonders Witwe Bock steht unter Verdacht, denn der Portier Krüger kann sie nicht leiden. Nun überlegt sie, wie man den wahren Täter zur Strecke bringen kann. Sie bohrt einige Briketts an, füllt sie mit Sprengpulver und lässt das Paket durch Familie Schulze in den Keller bringen. Krach und Zank nehmen kein Ende. Diesmal aber geht es ums Heiraten. Gustav Kluge begehrt Ilse Bock, die aber hat sich gerade mit Herrn Dr. Horn verlobt, der den Vorzug hat, im Vorderhaus zu wohnen. Auch Paula Schulze möchte heiraten und zwar den Bäcker, von dem sie ein Kind erwartet.  

In a Berlin back-house, there is incessant fighting among the tenants, because someone is constantly stealing coal from the basement.  The widow Bock is particularly suspected, not the least because the portier Kruger can’t stand her.  So Bock considers, how one might catch the real thief.  She drills into a few briquettes and fills them with gunpowder and arranges that the Schulze family transports it into the cellar  (no sense being blown up by your own invention now, is there?).  There’s no end to the noise and bickering.  But this time, it’s about marriage.  Gustav Kluge has the hots for Ilse Bock, who is engaged to Dr. Horn, who has the privilege to live in the front-house.  Paula Schulze wants to marry the baker, who got her pregnant.  And you thought Days of our Lives was the first soap opera ever invented!
