Professor Lorenz is a genius --- in science as well as in the art of living.  He's a happy man, though sometimes a little cranky and anti-social, but always well-disposed.  Lorenz has an especially deep love for his three children:  he would do anything for them.  For their part, the three children have inherited their father's happy-go-lucky view of the world and his natural intelligence.  Georg, the oldest, is a chemist like his father and carries out grand experiments in the old man's laboratory.  Philipp, the second son, maintains a racing stable, which regularly requires considerable funding.  And Monika, the nestling, wants to be an actress.  The three, however, have given little thought to where the money is coming from, which allows them to indulge their whims.  Luckily, Aunt Baumann, who leads the motherless household, has been able to bring about miracles with the little money at her disposal.  Nevertheless, one day, the money runs out.  Now the whole family is counting on the much coveted National Prize, which will actually be awarded to Professor Lorenz.  But on the day before the prize is awarded, a small banker shows up at Lorenz with a bunch of debtor notes, which he never signed, although his name is on them.

Professor Lorenz ist ein Genie – in der Wissenschaft wie auch in der Lebenskunst. Er ist ein glücklicher Mensch, manchmal ein wenig verschroben und weltfremd, aber immer frohgelaunt. Mit seinen drei Kindern verbindet Lorenz eine innige Liebe: Er würde alles für sie tun. Von ihrem Vater haben die drei ihre lebensbejahende Unbekümmertheit geerbt, und natürlich ihre Intelligenz. Georg, der Älteste, ist Chemiker wie sein Vater und stellt im Labor seines alten Herrn umfangreiche Experimente an. Philipp, der zweite Sohn, unterhält einen Rennstall, der regelmäßig beträchtlicher Zuschüsse bedarf. Und Monika, das Nesthäkchen, will unbedingt Schauspielerin werden. Woher das Geld für ihre kostspieligen Allüren kommt, darüber haben die drei sich allerdings noch keine Gedanken gemacht. Zum Glück weiß Tante Baumann, die den mutterlosen Haushalt führt, mit dem knappen Wirtschaftsgeld wahre Wunder zu vollbringen.  Dennoch sind eines Tages alle Quellen erschöpft. Jetzt baut die ganze Familie auf den hoch dotierten Nationalpreis, der eigentlich an Professor Lorenz gehen müsste. Am Tag vor der Preisverleihung taucht plötzlich ein kleiner Bankier bei Lorenz auf und legt ihm Reihe von Schuldscheinen vor – die er jedoch nie unterschrieben hat, obwohl sie seinen Namen tragen.
