The death of the Prime Minister causes a storm in a small residential town.  While Grand Marshal von Gillzing is hopeful, that he’ll be the successor to the dead man, Weber, his former secretary, is transferred to an unimportant post as an archivist.  And Baroness von Windegg, too, who earlier was the Prime Minister’s lover, fears her social standing will now be endangered.  But when the Baroness hands over a thick packet to the archivist, in which Gillzing believes the diaries of the dead Prime Minister are to be found, the Baroness and the archivist are suddenly in great demand; and everyone in the city is afraid they’re mentioned in the diary in a compromising light.

Der Tod des Ministerpräsidenten sorgt für Wirbel in der Gesellschaft einer kleinen Residenzstadt. Während Oberhofmarschall von Gillzing sich Hoffnung macht, der Nachfolger des Verstorbenen zu werden, wird Weber, sein ehemaliger Sekretär, auf einen unbedeutenden Posten als Archivar versetzt. Und auch Baronin von Windegg, die zuvor als Geliebte des Ministerpräsidenten galt, befürchtet, an gesellschaftlicher Geltung zu verlieren. Doch als die Baronin dem Archivar ein dickes Paket übergibt, von dem Gillzing glaubt, es enthalte die Tagebücher des verstorbenen Ministerpräsidenten, sind Baronin und Archivar plötzlich sehr gefragt, und jeder in der Stadt befürchtet, in dem Tagebuch in irgendeiner kompromittierenden Weise erwähnt zu werden.
