Baron Friedberg was not only successful in raising a capable daughter named Irene, but is also responsible for three talented protégés:  Maria has become a successful lawyer, who has married the talented painter, Uwe; and Irene intends to marry Friedberg’s third protégé, Dr. Berg, who has made a name for himself in archaeology.  Unfortunately, her relationship with him is not exactly blessed.  Bergius turns out to be an unscrupulous legacy-hunter and Maria is so buried in her career, that she totally neglects her marriage.  And so it happens, that Irene and Uwe have a short, but powerful, affair.

Baron Friedberg hat nicht nur eine tüchtige Tochter namens Irene großgezogen, sondern auch drei talentierte Schützlinge: Aus Maria ist eine erfolgreiche Anwältin geworden, die den talentierten Maler Uwe heiratet, und Irene wird Friedbergs dritten Protegé Dr. Bergius zum Mann nehmen, der es als Archäologe zu Ruhm und Ehre gebracht hat. Leider steht ihre Beziehung unter keinem guten Stern. Während sich Bergius als gewissenloser Erbschleicher entpuppt, geht Maria so sehr in ihrem Beruf auf, dass sie darüber ihre Ehe vernachlässigt. So kommt es, dass Irene und Uwe eine kurze, heftige Affäre beginnen.
