Proškovy děti netrpělivě očekávají příjezd své babičky na Staré bělidlo. Po selsku ustrojená žena si je hned získá laskavostí a moudrostí. Stejně snadno naváže vztah se sousedy, kteří se jí záhy začnou svěřovat se svými bolestmi. Nejvíce starou ženu dojme příběh šílené Viktorky, jež se jako dívka zamilovala do myslivce, odešla s ním a snad šťastně žila. Muž však na vojně padl a ona se vrátila do rodné vsi. Nedokázala už ale žít mezi lidmi, bloudila po lesích, až ji jednou za bouřky zabil padající strom. Této nešťastnici už babička nemohla pomoci. Je tu však Kristla a její Jakub, který má odejít na čtrnáct let na vojnu, a pak kněžnina schovanka Hortensie, která se trápí pro lásku k malíři. Když si babička získá náklonnost paní kněžny, přimluví se za mladé dvojice a také získá místo pro chudáka Kudrnu. 

The Prosek family children are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their grandmother from Stare Belidlo.  And when grandma arrives, she turns out to be a peasant woman with old traditions as well as kindness and wisdom.  It doesn't take grandma long before she's able to build relationships with her new neighbors, too, who tell her about their woes.  But most of all, the old woman is touched by the story of crazy Viktorka, a girl who was in love with a hunter and hoped to live happily ever after with him.  But her husband was killed in a duel on account of her and she returned back to the village, unable to live among her old neighbors, and wandered in the forest, singing to herself until a tree fell on her in a thunderstorm.  This unfortunate grandma couldn't help.  But there's Crista and Jacob.  Very much in love with one another, Crista is disconsolate, because Jacob's been drafted into the army for a 14-year stint.  Then there's Princess Hortensia, who is deeply in love with an Italian painter.  Grandma's able to intercede on the princess' behalf and to help both the young couple and poor Kudrna, a struggling man with lots of children.
