Im Nordamerika der Jahrhundertwende zieht sich der Aussteiger Atkins aus der Großstadt in ein einsames Tal zurück. Er trifft dort auf versprengte Indianer, die aus einem Reservat geflüchtet sind und ihm mit Argwohn begegnen. Allmählich kann er ihr Vertrauen gewinnen, doch ein anderer Störenfried schleicht sich ein: Der junge Geologe Morris giert nach Bodenschätzen und hängt sich an Atkins da er bei ihm einen Stein gesehen hat, der ihn auf Kupfervorkommen schließen lässt. Als er das Ziel seiner Suche erreicht hat, tötet er einen der Indianer, flieht aus dem Tal und kehrt mit Soldaten zurück.

In North America at the turn of the 19^th into the 20^th Century, a dropout by the name of Atkins leaves the big city and retreats into a lonely valley.  He meets scattered Indians there, who have fled from a reservation and they view him with suspicion.  He’s gradually able to win their trust, but another intruder soon arrives:  the young geologist Morris is hungry for the land’s natural resources and he’s clinging to Atkins, because he saw him with a stone, which suggests copper deposits in the region.  When he reaches the end of his quest, he kills an Indians, flees from the valley and returns with soldiers.
