Willy Ferrière has no more money and his mistress is costing him dearly. One day, at the bar, he declares he will pay 100,000 Francs to anyone who kills his aunt, from whom he'd inherit a lot of money. Someone tells him he's going to take care of it. The aunt is killed. A man, apparently simple-minded, is the ideal culprit. Commissioner Maigret senses that something is wrong.
