Nora, the wife of the architect Heinz Ottendorf, feels neglected by her husband.  He is getting more and more engrossed in his work, but Nora, apparently a stranger to hard work, suspects that the real reason for her husband's diverted attention must naturally be another woman.  Robert, the cousin of Nora's friend Marianne, has long been in love with Nora and sees an opportunity to win her hand.  Heinz, for all his distractions in his work and the phantom lover he doesn't have, isn't quite ready to let Nora go.  While he may be married to his work, his work is a fickle mistress:  he makes a career error and this leads to near financial ruin.  He begs Nora to be patient with him.  Marianne, who for her part is in love with Heinz, spins a web of deceit and intrigue, which leads to Robert taking a potshot at Heinz and then eventually causing Robert to kill himself.  In the meantime, Heinz has been wounded in the attack and this leads Nora to come to the conculstion that she belongs to her husband.

LIEBE IM RING (1930) * with switchable English subtitles *   Max Schmeling, Renate Müller and Olga Tschechowa

Art.No.:           948

This silent German film is a generally agreeable effort to transform heavyweight boxing champ Max Schmeling into a movie star.  It's the old saw about an up-and-coming pugilist who ignores his loyal girlfriend in favor of a wealthy adventuress.  His new romance nearly wrecks the hero's career, but with the help of his friends -- and of course, his real sweetheart -- he makes a spectacular comeback.  The final scenes show Schmeling and his new bride heading for America, which was evidently Mecca so far as pre-Hitle German filmmakers were concerned.  Max Schmeling's leading lady in Love in the Ring is Olga Tschechowa; in real life, he married the equally popular actress Anny Ondra.

ANGELIKA (1940) Olga Tschechowa, Albrecht Schoenhals and Friedrich Kayssler, Jürgen von Alten

Art.No.:           1073

Angelika, once a well-celebrated opera singer, has sacrificed her career for her husband, who wishes to become a successful painter (artistic, that is; not a house painter like you-know-who).  One day, he suffers a fatal accident while out horse riding.  A short time later, Angelika shoots the art dealer Immerzeel.  The court is unable to figure out the facts around the shooting, but assume that Immerzeel was her lover and sentence her to four years imprisonment for manslaughter.  Afterwards, Angelika finds it difficult to lead a normal life.  Her father-in-law wants nothing to do with her and when her daughter Anneliese wants to marry the son of a renowned banker, the father pushes to have the engagement cancelled.  The lawyer Dr. Westphal, who secretly loves Angelika, is convinced of her innocence.  He has put everything at stake to find out the truth and to rehabilitate her.

The maiden Duerthen, an artistically gifted woodcarver, lives together with the estate mangager Thomsen.  She suffers from this unfortunate bind, because, in reality, she loves Joachim, the son of the landowner.  To escape these entanglements, she accepts the offer of Mrs. Kerstin to come to Berlin to work.  But here, too, she finds no fulfillment in her life, as the stupid work bores her.  Only upon arriving in Italy does she feel free and can finally begin a life together with Joachim; something she has always wished for.
