A small, provincial theatre is facing bankruptcy. So the director sends his conductor, Florian, and his playwright, Gustav, to Vienna, where they're to watch Flotow's wonderful opera "Martha". Their plan is simply to copy the work and then successfully present it in the burbs. On their way, they get to know pretty Lena, who would gladly wish to become a successful singer and who falls in love with Florian. In Prague, they mistakenly identified as criminals and arrested. In their distress, they write their own "Martha" and present it as Flotow's work in the provinces after they're released. But when it's announced that a famous singer will appear at the premiere and will play the role of Martha as a guest performer, the whole scheme threatens to blow up in their faces.

Ein kleines Provinztheater steht vor dem Bankrott. Da schickt der Direktor seinen Kapellmeister Florian und den Dramaturgen Gustav nach Wien, wo sie sich die zugkräftige Oper "Martha" von Flotow ansehen sollen. Ihr Plan ist, das Stück einfach abzuschreiben und dann erfolgreich in der Provinz aufzuführen. Unterwegs lernen sie die hübsche Lena kennen, die gerne eine erfolgreiche Sängerin wäre und in die Florian sich verliebt. In Prag werden sie irrtümlich für Schwerverbrecher gehalten und verhaftet. In ihrer Not verfassen sie im Gefängnis ihr eigenes Stück "Martha" und bringen es nach ihrer Freilassung als Flotows berühmte Oper in die Provinz. Doch als angekündigt wird, dass zur Premiere eine berühmte Sängerin erscheinen und ein Gastspiel als Martha geben will, droht der ganze Schwindel aufzufliegen.
