Im Winter 1915/16 quartiert sich die Artilleriebatterie 38 in Courgenay ein. Anfangs noch der Meinung, dass bis Weihnachten der Krieg vorbei sei und die Armee wieder demobilisiert werden würde, werden die Männer enttäuscht, das Weihnachtsfest nicht im Familienkreis feiern zu können. Gilberte, die Wirtstochter des Hôtel de la Gare, organisiert für diese Männer ein Weihnachtsfest und wird schnell zum Idol der Soldaten. Heimlich liebt sie den Kanonier Hasler, der darunter leidet, dass seine Verlobte Tilly in Bern seine Briefe nicht beantwortet. Tillys Vater, der reiche Hotelier Odermatt, fängt Haslers Briefe nämlich ab und versteckt sie in seinem Schreibtisch. Als ein Kamerad von Hasler mit einem kranken Pferd nach Bern fahren muss, erfährt Tilly von der Sache und fährt umgehend in den Jura. Sie trifft dort ein, als die Soldaten gerade ein Lied anstimmen, das Hasler zu Ehren von Gilberte komponiert hat. Selbstlos verzichtet Gilberte auf Hasler, um ihn Tilly zu überlassen, kann sich dabei aber eine Träne nicht verkneifen.

In the Winter of 1915/16, Artillery Batter 38 is billeted in Courgenay. Initially, the opinion is that the war will be over by Christmas and the army will once again be demobilized. However, when reality sets in and the men realize they won't be able to celebrate the holidays with their families, they become disappointed and depressed. Gilberte, the innkeeper's daughter at the Hotel de la Gare, organizes a Christmas celebration for the men and soon becomes their adored idol. Secretly, she's in love with the cannoneer Hasler, who's tormented by the fact, that his fiancee Tilly back in Bern is not answering his letters. Tilly's father, the rich hotel owner Odermatt, has been intercepting his letter and hiding them in his desk. When a comrade with a sick horse is sent back to Bern, Tilly finds out what's been going on and journeys straightaway to her fiancee. She arrives just as the soldiers are singing a song Hasler composed in honor of Gilberte. Selflessly, Gilberte steps aside to let Hasler be with Tilly, but can't hide her tears in doing so.
