In the 30 years that August Bolle has turned his small business into a respectable, large factory, he's experienced a lot. But it never happened to him before, that a strange, young man burst into his office, said to him, "Your product is worth shit!", and then calmly continued on with "You'll soon be pressed to the wall, if you don't hire me." But Karl Grosse --- called Karl the Great by his friends --- doesn't say that in a pushy and rude manner, but with an undeniably charming and persuasive manner. And because he looks like the kind of person, who can really do something and because there really is some danger present, that the firm "August Bolle" will be driven to the wall by its most dangerous competitor, Westphalia A.G., the self-confident, young man is hired on the spot as a manager. It soon is noticed that the new manager is a very good man. He knows something about the business; deals with the customers as well as with the employees in a kind manner; is everywhere, sees everything, hears everything, and lends a hand, whenever and wherever it is needed. And the firm "August Bolle" unmistakably comes back to life. But Karl Grosse is far from being the fair-haired child. While he might have August Bolle's full trust, the boss' family is not so charmed by him.

August Bolle hat in den 30 Jahren, in denen er sein kleines Unternehmen zu einer angesehenen großen Fabrik ausgebaut hat, mancherlei erlebt. Aber das ist ihm bis jetzt doch noch nicht vorgekommen, daß ein wildfremder junger Mann in sein Kontor eindringt, ihm erklärt: „Ihre Ware taugt nichts!", und dann seelenruhig fortfährt: „Sie werden glatt an die Wand gedrückt – wenn Sie mich nicht engagieren!" Aber Karl Grosse, von seinen Freunden „Karl der Grosse" genannt, sagt das nicht etwa aufdringlich und frech, sondern mit unleugbarer Liebenswürdigkeit und Überzeugungskraft. Und weil er auch so aussieht, als ob er wirklich etwas kann und weil schließlich tatsächlich Gefahr besteht, daß die Firma August Bolle von der Konkurrenz, der Westfalia A.G. an die Wand gedrückt wird, wird der selbstbewusste junge Mann tatsächlich vom Fleck weg als Betriebsleiter angestellt. Bald zeigt sich, daß der neue Betriebsleiter wirklich ein sehr tüchtiger Kerl ist. Er versteht etwas vom Fach, wird mit den Kunden wie mit der Belegschaft in der gleichen liebenswürdig bestimmten Art fertig, ist überall, sieht alles, hört alles, legt selbst mit Hand an, wenn es Not tut – die Firma August Bolle holt unverkennbar wieder auf. Doch ist Karl Grosse noch lange nicht am Ziel. Wenn er auch August Bolles volles Vertrauen geniest, so versagt ihm die Familie des Chefs das ihrige umso entschiedener.
