A young doctor arrives at a rural train station to replace the old country doctor. The reception he gets is not especially welcoming. He can't convince a single peasant to take him and his luggage on a cart to his new home. Completely exhausted, he finally arrives at the house of the old doctor. He understands the concerns of his young successor, but takes away his fears by telling him the story of his own life in the countryside. It just so happened that his reception in the village was not so much different as he arrived there after growing up in Berlin.

Ein junger Arzt kommt auf einem ländlichen Bahnhof an, um die Nachfolge des alten Landarztes anzutreten. Doch besonders freudig ist der Empfang nicht. Er kann nicht einmal einen Bauer dazu überreden, ihn und sein schweres Gepäck auf seinem Wagen mitzunehmen. Völlig erschöpft kommt er schließlich im Haus des alten Arztes an. Der versteht die Besorgnis seines jungen Nachfolgers, nimmt ihm aber die Angst vor der Stelle, indem er ihm die Geschichte seines eigenen Lebens auf dem Land erzählt. Es erging ihm, der in Berlin aufwuchs, nicht viel anders, als er in der dörflichen Gegend ankam.
