Les apaches de la bande à Leca, des voyous qui hantent le quartier de Belleville, ont investi avec leurs femmes une guinguette du bord de Marne, à Joinville-le-Pont. Marie, une prostituée surnommée Casque d'Or en raison de son étincelante chevelure, s'est fâchée avec son amant du moment, le distingué Roland. Surgit alors Raymond, accompagné de son ami d'enfance, Manda, un ancien apache reconverti en charpentier sérieux et convaincu. Entre la belle et le charpentier, le coup de foudre est immédiat. Une passion destructrice, sur fond de rivalité au sein du gang, unit les deux amants … Un duel au couteau entre Roland et Manda pour l'amour de Casque d'Or aboutit à la mort de Roland. Leca ainsi que son gang ayant assisté au duel, prend la fuite, de même que Manda, du fait de l'irruption de la police. Manda et Casque d'Or cohabitent alors et leur liaison amoureuse est connue de Leca, qui, convoitant aussi Casque d'Or, décide d'accuser Raymond d'être l'assassin de Roland. Raymond étant en possession de la montre du défunt Roland, les policiers décident de le mettre en cause ; Raymond est ensuite incarcéré sur décision judiciaire. Manda apprenant cela se dénonce à la police et est emprisonné. Raymond reste tout de même en prison aussi. Marie se résout alors à aller chez Leca afin d'obtenir de celui-ci qu'il fasse évader son amant. Leca exige qu'elle couche avec lui. Mais, après cela, il se rétracte et refuse d'aider Casque d'Or. Celle-ci tente donc seule de faire évader Raymond et Manda. L'évasion réussit mais Raymond, atteint par un coup de feu de policier, meurt quelques heures plus tard. Manda ayant appris par Raymond que celui-ci avait été dénoncé par Leca, et ayant compris que Marie avait été contrainte de coucher avec ce dernier, n'a plus qu'une idée en tête, celle de rendre justice à Raymond en tuant Leca. Manda réussit alors à abattre Leca. Arrêté par les policiers, il est finalement guillotiné sous les yeux de Casque d'Or. 

Marie (Simone Signoret, who bears an amazing resemblance to Romy Schneider), a woman of considerable beauty, is distressed at her treatment by Roland, a criminal who is a part of a local syndicate. When Marie is introduced to the handsome stranger Georges, a humble carpenter, she falls in love with him instantly, much to the chagrin of Roland. When Roland's jealousy builds after a number of meetings between Marie and Georges, Roland decides to confront Georges behind a club where a number members of his syndicate watch. After Georges gains control of a knife that had been thrown between them to initiate the fight, George manages to stab Roland in the back after a brief scuffle, killing him almost instantly. When the police arrive at the scene everyone flees, including Marie, who seeks refuge away from the syndicate at a nearby village. Georges decides it is best to flee town. He is lured to a rendezvous with Marie by a note she sends. The two live an idyllic life in the nearby village, until Georges is brought word that a friend, Raymond, had been arrested for the murder of Roland. Félix, the leader of the syndicate, has placed blame on Raymond in an attempt to bring Georges out of hiding and win control of Marie. Not realizing this plan, Georges confesses to the police that he is the real killer. While being transported between jails, he breaks free with the help of a diversion by Marie. Georges immediately seeks out Félix to seek his revenge. When he finds him in the presence of the police, he kills him anyway, condemning himself in the process. With the two murders on his hands, Georges is sentenced to die by the guillotine while a broken Marie watches in horror as he is executed.
