Friedrich Mitterer, the grand, old actor in the Burg Theatre of Vienna, who has achieved everything in his career, which is to be achieved, falls in love with the daughter of a master tailor, the beautiful Leni.  Leni, however, is in love with the young and unknown actor Josef Rainer, who would do anything to act just once on the stage of the Burg Theatre.  Leni manages to get Rainer an invitation to a reception being thrown by Baroness Seebach, and because of that, gets a small part at the theatre.  But that has come with a price:  the baroness has fallen in love with him and when the baron finds out about it, he takes Rainer to task, who is then fired from his job at the theatre and threatens to commit suicide.  Leni is desperate and in the end, it is Mitterer, who recognizes that Leni and Rainer belong together.

From: nitrateera@gmail.com
In this melodrama, an elderly thespian falls for a rising young starlet. He admits his love for her and then announces that he will retire from the stage. The young woman pretends she loves him too, but her real motive is to give her struggling lover, also an aspiring actor, a break. The old actor learns the painful truth and though wounded, understands that the relationship would never have worked. When the young actor attempts to end his life, following the loss of his job at the Burg Theatre, it is the elderly actor who saves him.

They say there's no fool like an old fool, and Werner Krauss certainly does make a fool of himself in this classic film, believing that a young, attractive girl could actually love him, unaware that she is in love with a handsome young actor just hired by the prestigious Burgtheater.
Hans Moser in an elegantly played supporting role.
