It's the 7th Century, a time of great migrations on the European continent. Under pressure from the east, the Bulgarian tribes of Khan Kubrat are forced to split into four group with the hope that at least one group will survive. For twenty long years, Kubrat's youngest son, Khan Asparoukh, has led his people across many foreign lands to eventually find a new home on the Balkan Peninsula ... this time, forever. The story of this trek is told by Byzantine Velisarius, a hostage of the Bulgarians, who is forced to take part in their difficult march. He sees the people's suffering --- to whom he's already grown close in his heart --- and has witnessed the personal drama of Khan Asparoukh. In 681 AD, in an alliance with local, Slav tribes, the Bulgarians deal a decisive blow to the Byzantine Army, thus setting up the foundations for the modern Bulgarian state.
