VREDENS DAG  (DAY OF WRATH - 1943):

Day of Wrath is set in a Danish village in 1625, where an old woman Herlof's Marte (Anna Svierkier) is accused of witchcraft, which she had confessed to in order to save the film's main character, Anne, whose mother had already been a victim of the accusation.  Anne is newly married to the local Pastor, Absalon Pedersson (Thorkild Roose), who is involved with the trials of witches, and they live in a house shared with his strict domineering mother Meret (Sigrid Neiiendam).  Meret does not approve of Anne, she is much younger than her husband, and even younger than the son from his first marriage.  Eventually, the accusations of witchcraft against one spills over into fear and paranoia against others and the cycle of evil, which the townspeople are allegedly trying to destroy, is created and perpetuated by themselves.  Made during the period of the Nazi occupation of Denmark (1940-1945), the film's tale of individuals living in a repressive and paranoid society takes on added gravity. (98 mins.; in Danish, with English subtitles (switchable);  very good quality)

ISLE OF THE DEAD (1945):

The story is set on a Greek isle during the First Balkan War in 1912–1913, when a plague forces a quarantine on the island's visitors. As they die one by one, a young woman is accused of being a vorvolakas, a sort of vampire.  (72 mins.; very good quality)
