Klaus and Ulli grew up together like two brothers. Klaus works as a taxi drive in West Berlin and makes good money. He has no interest in politics. Ulli works as an electrician in an incandescent lamp factory in East Berlin. Both love Eva. Till now, she's been unable to choose between the two: Klaus can, of course, offer her more; but Ulli is the more serious of the two and more reliable. On the morning of 13 August 1961, the two boys face one another on the Oberbaum Bridge: Klaus, who wishes to go to work and exchange his currency; and Ulli, who's a member of a paramilitary unit, who, rifle in hand and standing guard at the new border, is preventing Klaus from leaving the Eastern Sector. Now Eva must decide which one she'll belong to.

Klaus und Ulli sind wie Brüder aufgewachsen. Inzwischen verdient Klaus als Taxifahrer in Westberlin gutes Geld, Politik interessiert ihn nicht. Ulli arbeitet als Elektriker im Ostberliner Glühlampenwerk. Beide lieben das Mädchen Eva. Sie kann sich vorerst nicht entscheiden: Klaus kann ihr mehr bieten, Ulli ist der Ernsthaftere und Zuverlässigere. Am Morgen nach dem 13. August 1961 stehen sich die Beinahe-Brüder auf der Oberbaumbrücke gegenüber, der Grenzgänger Klaus, der hinüber will zur Arbeit und zur Wechselstube, und Ulli als Angehöriger der Kampfgruppe, der ihn mit dem Gewehr in der Hand daran hindert. Und Eva muss sich endgültig entscheiden, zu wem sie gehört.
