Joachim Fuchsberger in seiner ersten großen Rolle.

3-part set of the anti-War German series put out shortly after the end of the Second World War describes the life of the German soldier from recruit to soldier on the Eastern Front.

08 / 15 - PART ONE  (1954):

This movie isn't actually a war movie but covers the life of German conscripts on the eve of the Second World War.  They are in the hands of ruthless and sadistic NCOs who are constantly trying to impose harsh measures against the men.  The officers on the contrary are shown much more civilized and see themselves somehow as a father-figure.  The tension between the privates and their superiors forms hard bonds of friendship between them, although they come from very different social backgrounds.  Private Vierbein and Gefreiter Asch are the two protagonists of this film.  Vierbein is a sensible piano-player that detests the rudeness and the lack of privacy in the barracks.  However, he is deeply in love with Asch's sister, who is a full-propagandized BDM-girl and demands that he become an officer.  In this tension, he attempts suicide on the shooting range but is hindered by Asch.  With Vierbein's stolen ammunition and deep knowledge of the internal processes, the practical and clever Asch is able to land a brilliant coup and to get his nasty superiors all removed from the unit.  The film ends with the beginning of  WWII. Many stereotypes about the different ranks were included in the film and in some cases they were played out excessively. Still many German soldiers may find similarities from some of their own experience.

08 / 15 - PART TWO  (1955):

Winter 1942:  Like thousands of other German soldiers, Asch and Vierbein have ended up at the Eastern front.   Although Vierbein finds a new friend in Kowalski, the squadron commander,  Captain Witterer, a true army veteran, gives them a really hard time.  Witterer’s pointless orders reflect the bad habits of many former superiors.  And again, Vierbein has to bear the brunt. Considering that Part Two of this trilogy was filmed only nine years after war's end, it should suprise no one that it is not only anti-miltaristic, but leaves the impression that the Wehrmacht committed no atrocities or improper actions on the Eastern Front, where the plot of this film is set.  Nonetheless, it is by far one of the best portrayals of the Wehrmacht in WWII.  It does not vilify or victimize the Germans as so many movies do today, but is presented honestly and unapologetically having been produced by the people who were actually there.

08 / 15 - PART THREE  (1955):

The third part of Paul May's "08/15" trilogy based on the novel by Hans Hellmut Kirst takes place shortly before the end of World War II:  In the spring of 1945,  German troops are practically defeated, and the battalion of Kowalski, Major General von Plönnies and Asch, who had risen to the rank of Lieutenant in the meantime, is left to its own devices to a large extent.  They hope to be able to wait for the end of the war without having to encounter any combat operations.  At the same time, Asch tries to prevent high-level Nazi officers from disappearing unnoticed and from cashing in on the chaotic circumstances.

2 DVD SET: THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR (1936 - 1939)

SPECIAL PRICE $18.99 till APRIL 1, 2016 (reg. price $26.99)

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0003/0003513-2-dvd-set-the-spanish-civil-war-1936-1939.jpghttp://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0003/0003514-2-dvd-set-the-spanish-civil-war-1936-1939.jpg

In 1931, while most of Europe was turning to dictatorship and military governments to solve the economic crises in their lands, a Republican government emerged in Spain, overthrowing the long, strangling hold of the monarchy and the Catholic Church. What followed was a strong, liberal backlash against the Church and the military which eventually led to a coup of officers and a three year civil war to reverse the coup. Into this civil war were thrown not only the people of Spain, but foreigners, who fought in Spain either to further their perceived ideals or to use the country as a proving ground for the upcoming world war.

This 2 DVD set explores the reasons behind the civil war in Spain and chronicles its events. For anyone with an interest in the topic, these DVDs give a very clear and entertaining look into an event little talked about outside of a now, once more, democratic Spain.

ALLOTRIA (1936) * with switchable English subtitles *

Two friends, who end up in turmoil and amorous troubles thanks to promises, secrets and outright confusion.  Although the plantation owner Philipp and his best friend, the race car driver David, have given their word never to fall in love with the same woman, this seems to be exactly what has happened.  Instead of taking care of his girlfriend Amy, Philipp took an ocean cruise and promptly fell in love with Viola, but then renounced claiming her when he had the chance.  Visiting his old friend, he mistakingly believes David has married Viola; and although David wants to tell him the truth that Gaby is his wife, it takes a long while for the truth to come out ... with the result that revenge soon takes the place of confusion.

Watching Willi Forst's wonderful, screwball comedy - released at the time of the Berlin Olympics in 1936 - it's almost possible to imagine a 1930s Germany, in which Nazism never happened.  This is an elegant, fast-paced film drawing on some of the classiest comedy talent Germany had to offer at the time; and self-consciously modern, with its cocktails, ocean liners, racing car drivers and drop-dead art deco interiors.  Anton Walbrook is suitably Errol Flynn-like as the handsome lady killer Phillip, while Heinz Ruehmann is, for once, overshadowed by his co-stars.  It's the women who steal the show here, including the excellent Renate Mueller, who also starred in Viktor, Viktoria and habitually played modern, emancipated types.  But the film belongs even more to Hilde Hildebrandt as the vampish Amy, who better than anyone else in this ensemble piece knows how to camp it up to the max when necessary.

BOMBEN AUF MONTE CARLO (1931) *with switchable English subtitles*

The captain of a battleship of a small Balkan country is fed up with following strange orders from the country's queen, who wants to make a cruise to the Mediterranean, in spite of the fact that the country is broke and the crew didn't get its salary.  So he decides to disobey orders and commands his ship to Monte Carlo; but the queen decides to go there too.  He loses his money there at the casino, but the queen falls in love with him.

Kurt Gerron, who plays the casino manager in the movie, had left Nazi Germany with his wife and parents, first to Paris and then later to Amsterdam. He was offered employment in Hollywood by Peter Lorre and Josef von Sternberg's agency, but refused several times, one time allegedly because his potential employer did not offer first class tickets to America. It was to be a fatal decision: after the Wehrmacht occupied the Netherlands, he was interned in the transit camp at Westerbork before eventually being sent to Theresienstadt. There, he ran a cabaret to entertain the inmates. In 1944, Gerron was compelled by the Nazis to make a propaganda film showing the allegedly humane conditions at Therestienstadt for its Jewish internees. Entitled, Der Führer schenkt den Juden eine Stadt (The Führer Gives the Jews a City), it was still being filmed when Soviet troops overran the extermination camp at Majdanek in July 1944 and the world had confirmed proof of the mass extermination machine for the first time. This publicizing of the death camp led to the abandonment of the filming, since its propaganda value was now useless. This, in turn, eventually led to Gerron's deportation to Auschwitz on the final transport from Theresienstadt in October 1944. Gerron was gassed immediately upon arrival at Auschwitz; Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler ordered the gas chambers at Auschwitz to cease operation the very next day. The propaganda film, which we sell in our GERMAN PANORAMA series, exists only as an incomplete fragment.

THERE IS A NEWSREEL PREVIEW BEFORE THE FILM, JUST AS GERMAN AUDIENCES MIGHT HAVE SEEN WHEN THE MOVIE WAS FIRST SHOWN (except this newsreel may not be contemporary to when the film was released).

DER BRAVE SUNDER (1931) * with switchable English subtitles *

Fritz Kortner's directorial debut is the only film of the screenplay by Alfred Polgar:  It is based on Polgar's play, "The Embezzlers" (after Valentin Katayev's novel of the same name) and tells the story of the chief cashier Leopold Pichler, a strait-laced family man with principles.  With his subordinate Witek, he withdraws 8,000 Schillings from the bank on a rainy Saturday for the bank director, Baron Max von Hartl.  The director has left for Vienna, however, and so the two cashiers travel after him with the money, because "you can rely on Pichler!"  Pichler goes into a fashionable night club in Vienna and ends up at the side of the black jazz dancer Kitty and also at the side of a game of chance.  The money is lost; his reputation seems irretrievably lost; and further events bring Pichler and Witek to the brink of madness.

DER MANN, DER SEINEN MORDER SUCHT (1931) * with switchable English subtitles *

Hans Herfort wants to shoot himself because he is mired down in debt.  Shortly before the suicide attempt, however, he is surprised by Otto Kuttlapp, who has criminally broken into his home.  It then becomes Otto's turn to be surprised when Hans demands that Otto take the gun he is threating Hans with and shoot him.  Now Otto may be a burglar, who will shoot someone getting in the way of the commission of a crime, but he is no Dr. Kervorkian and outright refuses to assist Hans commit suicide  (okaaaaaay).  Morally repulsed by the idea of assisted suicide -- and not even a part-time Oregon resident -- he instead recommends to Hans that he seek out "The White Vest", an organization, which is known to help out those looking to kill themselves.

And yes:  this is a comedy!  If you like black comedies, you'll like this one.  Like most people's lives who commit suicide, the film is of short duration.

DER MANN, DER SHERLOCK HOLMES WAR (1937) *with switchable English subtitles*

Hans Albers plays the detective Morris Flynn, and Heinz Rühmann his assistant Macky McMacpherson.  They stop a train to Brussels at night, and due to their behaviour and clothes, personnel believe that they are Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.  This is indeed Flynn's and McMacpherson's intention, but they claim not to be the famous detective and his friend, and they urge them not to tell anybody.  They interrogate people in order to make their cover perfect, among them two attractive sisters, Mary and Jane Berry, who travel to accept their uncle's heir.  In Brussels the would-be Holmes and Watson stay at Hotel Palace, and immediately police asks them to solve a case.  During the 1910 World Exposition, stamps have been stolen and replaced by fcounterfeits.  Observed and later attacked by gangsters, Flynn and McMacpherson find out that the two sisters' uncle has been the forger and boss of the gang.  Their working place is found in the cellar of the uncle's castle the sisters inherited.  Flynn and McMacpherson are put on trial for impersonating the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend.  Then a laughing man stands up, who had observed the duo several times, and reveals himself as Arthur Conan Doyle.  He explains that Holmes and Watson are fictional characters created by himself. Flynn and McMacpherson get engaged with Mary and Jane Berry.

DER STOLZ DER 3. KOMPANIE (1931) * with switchable English subtitles *

The musketeer Gustav Diestelbeck is the victim of the chicaneries of his squad leader, Sergeant Krause; especially concerning the attentions of the young Emma, who likes both men, but particularly favors Gustav.  When Diestelbeck unintentionally causes his comrades to become the subject of a company-wide punishment, he finds himself on the spot with Lieutenant Gernsbach.  Gernsbach makes him responsible to have the company put on a theatre piece for the regiment's jubilee celebration, at whose production the regent Prince Willibald will be present; but under Diestelbeck's leadership everything falls into utter chaos.

DIE DREI VON DER TANKSTELLE (1930) + PIRSCH UNTER WASSER (1939) *with switchable English subtitles *

Three well-off young men return home in a luxurious cabriolet to find that all their furniture has been seized. Their lawyer informs them that their bank has gone bankrupt and that they have lost their entire fortune. Instead of bemoaning the catastrophe, they open a petrol station which provides enough to live on, but does not make them rich. Willy, Kurt and Hans have no intention of allowing their friendship to suffer as a result of life's caprices. The appearance of a charming woman, however, poses a serious threat: all three fall in love with Lilian, although none of the three at first realizes that the same woman is taking them for a ride. Lilian enjoys their attention for a while, but then decides in favor of Willy and is faced with the difficult task of telling the other two. A major quarrel ensues, apparently leading to the end of the friendship between the three men, as well as of the romance between Lilian and Willy.

PIRSCH UNTER WASSER

Short "filmette" put out by UFA in 1939 details the underwater adventures of three German youths in Curacao just after the War broke out.  Basically, a film about underwater life in the Caribbean ... one of the few "culture" films put out in wartime Germany without any political agenda, hidden or otherwise.

DIE FEUERZANGENBOWLE (1944) *with switchable English subtitles*

Die Feuerzangenbowle ("The Fire-Tongs Bowl" or "The Punch Bowl") is a 1944 movie, directed by Helmut Weiss and is based on the book of the same name.  It follows the book closely as author Spoerl also wrote the script for the movie.  Both tell the story of a famous writer going undercover as a student at a small town secondary school after his friends tell him that he missed out on the best part of growing up by being educated at home.  The story in the book takes place during the time of the Wilhelminian Empire in Germany.  The movie was produced and released in Germany during the last years of World War II and has been called a "masterpiece of timeless, cheerful escapism."   The movie stars Heinz Rühmann in the role of the student Hans Pfeiffer, which is remarkable as Rühmann was already 42 years old at that time.

The title refers to the Feuerzangenbowle punch consumed by a group of gentlemen in the opening scene.  While exchanging nostalgic stories about their schooldays, the successful young writer Dr. Johannes Pfeiffer realizes he missed out on something because he was taught at home and never attended school.  He decides to make up for it by masquerading as a student at a small town high school and quickly gains a reputation as a prankster.  Together with his classmates, he torments his professors Crey, Bömmel and Headmaster Knauer with adolescent mischief.  His girlfriend Marion unsuccessfully tries to persuade him to give up his foolish charade.  Eventually, he falls in love with the headmaster’s daughter and discloses his identity after provoking the teachers into expelling him from school.

CHRONICLE OF THE FLAMING YEARS (1961)

The war has ended and Soviet troops are marching past the ruins of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.  Among them, a young Ukrainian, Ivan Orliuk, who hails from the Dnipr region. Before the war, he tilled the soil and lived a simple and peaceful like in his beloved Ukraine.  But with the Fascist invasion of the Soviet Union, he is forced to take up arms.  This is the story of that journey; the hardships of those left behind under German occupation; the difficulties of adjusting to peace in a liberated country.  Like many of Dovzhenko's films, the monologues are verbose and preachy; the plot abstract and often confusing.  Subtitling rarely does little to clarify the opaque; the constant overacting little to relieve the oppressive feeling of watching unvarnished propaganda.  Still, interpeting between the lines and watching carefully reveal a deep and genuine love by the director for his homeland and its culture.

Dr. Malic's psychiatric clinic is on the verge of bankruptcy.  He has only two patients in his hospital and the cynical doctor often spends his free time at the local pub across the street. But the doctor's problems are about to get a good deal worse after he has a chance encounted with a certain Colonel Howard, an Englishman, who asks the doctor to hide "Alex" at his clinic.  Howard claims to be working for the U.S. Department of Strtegic Warfare -- a bit strange, as the good colonel can't stand the sight of blood -- and "Alex" is allegedly a CIA agent, who needs a place to hide at for a few days.  Apparently, the intelligence agent in question knows something very important about nuclear weaponry and intelligence agencies the world over would love to get their hands on him.  Dr. Malic agrees to temporarily hide the man ... and a partial pay-off of one million Francs in advance doesn't hurt to convince him of his "patriotic" duty to NATO.  Preparations are made for the arrival of "Alex".  Dr. Malic' nurse unexpectedly goes on vacation and is replaced by the uncouth and untrustworthy-looking Miss Harper ... something the doctor neither knew about beforehand nor appreciates after the fact.  Shortly afterwards, his maid disappears and the "visitors" who show up unbidden at the doctor's hospital and the disappear just as quickly lend an air of crime and subversiveness to the plot.  Finally, "Alex" arrives, a fearful-looking creature with sunglasses and black gloves, both of which he never takes off.

Secret agents in the pay of Empress Catherine of Russia flee the Venetian Republic after stealing a compromising letter belonging to the Doge's wife.  This letter is of great importance to the Empress.  Catherine intends to annex some lands to the Russian Empire; the Doge opposes the annexation.  Should this letter fall into Catherine's hands, the embarrassment of publicly releasing it would break the Doge's resistance.  The theft of the letter is attributed to the Doge's secretary, who is being tortured in the hopes he'll reveal where the letter is.  Casanova, the accused's brother, has been exiled from Venice and there's a price on his head.  Nevertheless, he secretly returns to Venice and is able to talk to his brother, who tells Casanova what's in the letter and where it's located.  This leads to various intrigues as Casanova chases after the stolen letter to prevent the execution of his brother.

NAZI GERMANY:  WHW PROPAGANDA BOOKLET (TAG DER WEHRMACHT - GEORG VON NEUFVILLE)

SPECIAL PRICE $8.99 till MARCH 1, 2016 (reg. price $11.49)

The Winterhilfswerk (WHW) was an annual drive by the Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt (the National Socialist People’s Welfare Organization) to help finance its charitable work. Its slogan was "None shall starve nor freeze". It ran from 1933-1945 and was designed to provide food and fuel to Germans. The Hitlerjugend and Bund Deutscher Mädel were extremely active in collecting for this charity. Donors were often given small souvenir gifts of negligible value as a sign of appreciation for their donations. A typical such gift was a very small propaganda booklet about 0.8" wide x 1.5" tall. More generous donors would receive nicer gifts, such as lapel pins on a wide variety of themes. Each individual miniature book, badge, badge set or toy set was only available for two or three days of a particular collection drive. So the populace would be encouraged to donate the following week and thereby collect the latest in the series.

In honor of the Tag der Wehrmacht, the WHW put out a series of booklets in the Winter of 1942-43 with fallen heroes of the Wehrmacht, all Knights Cross Bearers.

Each booklet is 2 3/4" x 2" and have 7 pages with pictures and descriptions.
