EAST AND WEST  (1923)  * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

Morris Brown, a New Yorker much more familiar with his checkbook than a prayer book, takes a trip back to Galicia with his very American daughter, Mollie, for a family wedding.  The bride, the daughter of his traditionally observant brother, and Mollie couldn't be any more different from one another.  But Mollie unexpectedly meets her match in an engaging, young Yeshiva scholar, who forsakes tradition and joins the secular world to win Mollie over.

JEWISH LUCK  (1925)  * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

Jewish Luck was one of the first Soviet Yiddish films to be released in the United States during the 1920s.  Based on Sholem Aleichem's series of stories featuring the character Menakhem Mendl, the film revolves around this daydreaming entrepreneur, who specializes in doomed strike-it-rich schemes.  Some of the finest artistic talents among Soviet Jewry appears in this film and it's been speculated that Eduard Tisse's filming of certain scenes carried over into a much more famous project, namely, Battleship Potemkin, where the well-known "Odessa steps" scene mirrors the very same setting of the finale in Jewish Luck.  The original Russian intertitles for this film were written by the famous author Isaac Babel, who later fell victim to the Stalinist purges of the late 1930s.  At the time the film was made, however, the USSR was one of the very few European powers alleging its protection and promotion of minorities' rights, a declaration that contrasted glaringly with the situation of minorities in most of the newly independent eastern European nation states.  Not long after Stalin took power in 1924, however, the superficially liberal policies of the Bolsheviks would be eliminated and replaced with stifling conformist dictates.

SMOULDERING FIRES  (1925)

At 40, Jane Vale, a domineering and successful businesswoman, falls in love with Robert Elliott, a young man employed in the factory she manages. She makes him her private secretary, and he soon asks her to marry him, both out of gratitude and to defend her reputation against the ugly gossip of his fellow workers. Before the wedding, Jane's younger sister, Dorothy, returns from college, and she and Robert fall in love, but they lack the courage to tell Jane. Robert and Jane are married, and he tries to make her happy, but everything conspires to make her feel the difference in their ages: she is worn out and worried, unsuccessfully trying to look young and unable to mingle easily with Robert's young friends. When Jane finally realizes that Robert, though he is faithful and attentive to her, is really in love with Dorothy, she pretends that she no longer loves him and asks for a divorce. Robert and Dorothy, alike in age and inclination, are thus free to find the happiness that has eluded Jane.

THE UNFORTUNATE BRIDE  (1926)  * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

This film within a film involves a grandfather telling his grandchildren a cautionary tale about a Jewish dissident-writer, who leaves his wife in Russia and heads for America to learn English and begin a new life as a journalist.  When he learns from a friend that his wife back in Russia has died, he takes up with the daughter of a cantor.  It isn't long before he discovers the "value" system among American Jews, when the woman's parents reject him, because he's poor.  The story gets a bit more complicated, however, when Wife No. 1 shows up and the cantor's daughter defies her parents by taking control of her own decisions.

Originally released in Great Britain in 1937 as Secret Lives, this WWI melodrama tells the story of a German woman forced into a marriage of convenience with French lieutenant Pierre de Montmalion.  If she hopes to avoid being deported from her new home in Switzerland, she'll have to work as a spy for the French against her countrymen back in Germany.  If that weren't enough, Lieutenant de Montmalion, her alleged husband, hates her guts and has no problem telling her so.  In the end, however, the two fall in love.

LA HABANERA  (1937)  * with switchable English subtitles *

https://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0003/0003421-la-habanera-1937-with-switchable-english-subtitles.jpg

Astrée and her aunt from Sweden are vacationing in Puerto Rico.  Astrée is enchanted by the local habanera musicas well as by Don Pedro de Avila, a rich and powerful landowner.  Upon embarkation, she spontaneously decides to stay; she runs down the gangway, finds him waiting for her, and soon is married. Ten years later - it is now 1937 - Astrée finds herself trapped in an unhappy marriage.  Her paradise has turned to hell; only her son, Juan, is the reason for her to stay.  Meanwhile in Stockholm, Dr. Sven Nagel, a former lover of Astrée, and his associate, Dr. Gomez, bid farewell.  They are departing for Puerto Rico to investigate the mysterious and deadly Puerto Rico fever.  On the island, their arrival is met with dismay by Don Pedro and his business associates as they fear the focus on the Puerto Rico fever will depress their business; so they plan to deny its existence.  An earlier attempt by researchers from the Rockefeller Institute to find a cure had been a failure, and the resulting publicity had depressed the local economy and rsulted in widespread famine.  Once in Puerto Rico, the two investigators receiving no local support proceed to conduct their studies on their own in the hotel room.  Meanwhile, Astrée has a fall-out with her husband about their son.  He wants him to learn about bull-fighting, while she has been teaching him about snow and Sweden.  Thus Don Pedro decides to take the education of Juan out of her hands.  Astrée in response books a passage to leave Puerto Rico with her son to return to Sweden. Meanwhile the Puerto Rico fever is starting to claim its first victims, and Drs. Nagel and Gomez search for a cure secretly.  Don Pedro learns about Astree’s plans and suspects that Dr. Nagel is involved.  He invites him for a soiree to have an opportunity to have his hotel room searched and gain evidence against him for his arrest and deportation.  Thus at the soiree Dr. Nagel and Astrée meet and fall in love again.  Astrée sings La Habanera presumably for her husband, but the song declares her love for the doctor.

PROTEKTORAT BOHMEN UND MAHREN:  PERSONAL ID DOCUMENT  (1939)

ID papers in a cardboard cover issued in the Protektorat Bohmen und Mahren on 18 November 1939, specifically in Kladno.  That this ID was used (temporarily) in liberated Czechoslovakia after the War is obvious, not only because of the red pencil marks crossing out references to the Protektorat, but also by the faded ink stamp on the cover page which reads, Ceskoslovenske republike.  At the time of its issuance, the ID holder was a 43 year old woman.  The ID consists of 10 pages, the last of which had instructions in both German and Czech, the following of which could be a matter of life, imprisonment, and/or death.  The cardboard cover is warped and the pages have dirt and stains.  But the ID is intact.

UNSTERBLICHER WALZER  (1939)

KRAMBAMBULI - DIE GESCHICHTE EINES HUNDES  (1940)  *Improved Picture Quality*

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0001/0001154-krambambuli-die-geschichte-eines-hundes-1940.jpg

An intertitle, which is seen shortly after this film about a dog’s life begins, states, “… and with this step into freedom began Krambambuli’s journey into the great, wide world.  Had he suspected what awaited him out there, he surely would have returned straightaway to his basket and stayed at home”.  The film concerns a homeless man, who finds and befriends the pup; eventually finding a job at an inn, where he falls in love with a co-worker, whose heart is meant for another.  Krambambuli ends up with her and the new love after the homeless man temporarily disappears and is later caught in the impossible situation of having to be loyal to two masters; with disastrous results for all involved.  This is a Heimatfilm without the usual happy ending.  Bring a handkerchief and flush most of the sleeping pills and liquor down the toilet before you watch it.  You’ve been warned!

BERLINER BALLADE  (1948)  * with switchable English subtitles *

An invisible narrator leads the moviegoer back from the beautiful, modern world of the year 2048 to Berlin in the early years of the postwar period, drawing attention to the Everyday Man, a quasi-synthetic, typical German who's living through all the problems unique to those years.  The stresses and absurdity of daily life back then are incorporated in this harmless and gullible Everyday Man, trying to find a place to live in his partly-destroyed apartment, in which uninvited guests have taken up residence.  They're incorporated in his search for work and something to eat in the fields of rubble, which at one time were Berlin.  He attends political events and experiences not only the usual selfishness, discontent and indifference, but also the undying old militarism, as well as a new one.  His dreams of abundance keep leading the Everyday Man back to a pretty saleswoman, whom he eventually marries.  Yet the political and military developments during the Berlin Blockade once again threaten the Everyday Man:  symbolically, he is dejected; but at the very last moment, he lifts himself up and rejects those bad characteristics of mankind, opting instead to find his freedom in his own, private happiness.

PHOTO MEMBERSHIP ID FOR CZECH FOOTBALL CLUB - DSO RUDA HVEZDA  (1955)

Membership ID book issued to a participant in the DSO Ruda Hvezda, a Czech football club.  The book was issued to a 32-year old man in 1955.  Interestingly enough, when researching this club, I came up with information that it did not exist that far back (the ID holder belonged to the club since 1952).  Obviously, that information is incorrect or is referring to another, similarly named club.  The multi-paged booklet has coupons indicating membership dues paid as well as a typewritten acknowledgement of award for performance.
