A new way to search our store with the help of Google custom search

As you may have noticed our store search engine has many shortcomings, most of all it performs literal queries – it can only match chains of characters down to a letter. The new Google search we made available in both stores  is more flexible, more intelligent, it will consider partial words, synonyms, alternative spellings (also between languages) and it is much faster – search results are returned instantly.

You can try it here: http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/t/Google

To search losthomeland.com please go here: http://losthomeland.com/t/Google

Sybille Schmitz, who was previously so memorable as the attractive blood-sucker in Dreyer's Vampyr, heads the cast as woman-of-mystery Madeleine. The story begins at the ending, as Madeleine's dead body is pulled from the river. With no identification on her person, Madeleine remains unidentified -- to everyone but the viewer, who is apprised of the girl's melancholy history via flashback.

Foreman Kramp has a little side-project next to his work at a car factory:  he's feverishly trying to develop a new light-metal alloy piston.  When an old friend, Greininger, is employed at the plant, Kramp proudly tells him about his secret invention, which is almost completed.  Shortly thereafter, Kramp suffers an heart attack --- no doubt due to stupidity --- and has to go to a health resort.  After a few weeks of impatience, he returns back to his workplace only to discover that his good buddy stole his idea and is selling it as his own.  Real smart.

Achim and Vera are friends and live an uncomplicated and happy life .... that is, until they get into their first serious argument on how they should spend New Years' Eve.  Vera wants to celebrate with friends, while Achim wants to go off to a lonely mountain hut.  And so, he goes off alone into the mountains.  In the hut, he meets the student Susanne, with whom he spends New Years' Eve; gets to know well; and falls in love with.  Unfortunately, through misfortune, they lose sight of each other afterwards.  They didn't even bother to exchange names and addresses!  And so, with Craigslist not yet in existence, it seems very unlikely they'll ever see one another again.

The Winterhilfswerk (WHW) was an annual drive by the Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt (the National Socialist People’s Welfare Organization) to help finance its charitable work. Its slogan was "None shall starve nor freeze". It ran from 1933-1945 and was designed to provide food and fuel to Germans. The Hitlerjugend and Bund Deutscher Mädel were extremely active in collecting for this charity. Donors were often given small souvenir gifts of negligible value as a sign of appreciation for their donations. A typical such gift was a very small propaganda booklet about 0.8" wide x 1.5" tall. More generous donors would receive nicer gifts, such as lapel pins on a wide variety of themes. Each individual miniature book, badge, badge set or toy set was only available for two or three days of a particular collection drive. So the populace would be encouraged to donate the following week and thereby collect the latest in the series.

This booklet (about 1.4" x 2") has approximately 12 pages.

USSR:  NKVD-ISSUED PASSPORT FOR A POLE IN VOLODYMYR-VOLYNSKI, UKRAINE  (1940)

1940-issued passport with 14 pages.  On the back page is an indication that the passport was printed in (Soviet) Ukraine in 1938 and, indeed, the headings on each page are in both Russian and Ukrainian.  The holder of the passport is a 60 year old woman the passport identifies as being of Polish nationality and living in Volodymyr-Volynski, Ukraine (formerly Włodzimierz Wołyński in Poland prior to 17 September 1939).  In September 1939, the Soviets invaded eastern Poland and gave the residents there the choice of either accepting Soviet passports or to face possible deportation east as an undesirable "alien".  The all-important "Category 5" on the passport indicates her "social class", in this case, "working class".  Passport was issued on 10 October 1940 and was valid until that date in 1945.  Over the picture on the passport is an indented stamp reading "NKVD", the forerunner to the KGB.  The entry designating the issuing agent also indicates that the local NKVD issued the passport.   There are entries on 5 of the pages.  The cloth cover on the passport is detached from the cardboard cover, though it is still being held in place by the staples in the spine.  Several of the pages are starting to come loose.  And, as can be seen from the scan of the main page, there is damage to the pages from wear and mishandling.

WIR ZOGEN GEGEN POLEN - THE SEVENTH ARMY CORPS IN THE BATTLE OF POLAND (1940)

Almost 150 paged book with photos and a campaign map in the back of the book about the 7th Armeekorps' adventures in the Polish Campaign, which took them from Cosel north of Ratibor (Raciborz) in the Reich on an eastward path to Zamosc.  Very interesting photos and a viewpoint of the campaign from the "enemy" side of the conflict.

Each individual miniature book, badge, badge set or toy set was only available for two or three days of a particular collection drive. So the populace would be encouraged to donate the following week and thereby collect the latest in the series.

In honor of the Tag der Wehrmacht, the WHW put out a series of booklets in the Winter of 1942-43 with fallen heroes of the Wehrmacht, all Knights Cross Bearers.

KENNKARTE #34 - SCHUTZANGEHORIGE BROMBERG  (issued 19 October 1944)

Kennkarte (Deutsches Reich) issued to a Pole with the remark, "Schutzangehörige (eingegl. Ostgebiete)", which indicated the holder was not a German national, but a "foreign" resident of the annexed Eastern Territories, which was the name given to that part of Poland incorporated into the Reich after the end of the Polish Campaign in 1939.  Such ID holders were considered "probationary" residents, whose privileges could be withdrawn at any time, if their behavior was not considered acceptable to Reich authorities.  In such cases, the revocation of the status usually led to expulsion into the Generalgouvernement, the "reservoir" remnant of the Polish nation under German jurisdiction or deportation into a concentration camp in extreme cases.

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0005/0005413-photobook-dresden-as-it-was-in-1933-and-1945-1945.jpg

Photobook put out by the City Council of Dresden in 1945 under Soviet occupation with before-and-after photos of the city as each subject looked like at the time the Nazis took over in Germany and at the time of this book's publishing, when the city was recovering from the firebombing of February 1945.  The intent of the book is obvious -- it's a condemnation of the Nazis and their system, for sure; but put out under the Communists, you can imagine whom else is the subject of their wrath.  Fortunately, it's almost all photos and little rhetoric.

Between 1939 and 1945, the Reichsbahn served as the logistical backbone for the German armed forces.  With the advance of German troops into more and more countries, the Reichsbahn found itself needing to constantly expand.  This not only included the rail lines themselves, but that of personnel, which grew to include native employees in those countries the Wehrmacht overran.  This wonderful --- and large and heavy --- coffee-table photobook has 472 pages of  photos and information about the subject.  Many of the photos in this book were never published, but until now, had disappeared into archives or private collections.  These unique photos document the effects of Allied air attacks on the railways in France and Germany, as well as everyday life in the stations and depots in the Reich, Italy, the occupied parts of the USSR, and so on.  A real treasure for those not only interested in military history, but a treat for those with a penchant for railway history and all associated therewith.
