CITY GIRL  (1930)

Lem goes to Chicago to sell the wheat his family has grown on their farm in Minnesota. There he meets the waitress Kate. They fall in love and get married before going back to the farm. Kate is accepted by Lem's mother and kid sister but is rejected by his father, who believes she married for the money. (And the fact that Lem didn't get a fair price for the wheat is her fault, too). The reapers arrive and quickly they make things even more complicated by making their move on Kate. Lem misunderstands the situation and believes Kate is actually interested. In despair Kate leaves the farm and Lem goes looking for her.

2 DVD SET:  DAS MADCHEN VOM MOORHOF  (1935 - subtitled & 1958)

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0004/0004168-2-dvd-set-das-madchen-vom-moorhof-1935-subtitled-1958.jpg

DISCOUNTED SET WITH THE 1935 FILM SUBTITLED, BUT NOT THE 1958 ONE:

THE 1935 VERSION:

The servant Helga Christmann is made pregnant by a farmer and is chased away, because the farmer denies being the father of the child. Helga decides not to sue him, because she doesn't want to force him to commit perjury. The inhabitants of the area know, however, that Helga is telling the truth. When the farmer's son Karsten Dittmar gives the woman a job at his farm, fate seems to have turned once again in Helga's favor. But a short time later, Karsten's future wife shows up at the estate and forces her fiancee to dismiss Helga.

THE 1958 VERSION:

This film version of the novel by Selma Lagerlof takes place in Sweden in 1882.  Helga Nilsson is a servant in Eric Martinsson’s house.  He seduces her but rejects his paternity, when she ends up pregnant.  Fearing for the loss of his reputation, he even swears such in court.  Helga withdraws her claim and is forthwith considered a slut.  After attempting suicide, she ends up as a servant girl at the home of the good-natured farmer Gudmund Erlandsson, who considers her to be innocent and admires her, which his fiancée Hildur is less than thrilled about.  In the night before their wedding, Gudmund gets into a fight with Martinsson, who is found dead the next day.  Gudmund is now suspected of murder.  Hela however knows, that he’s innocent … and she can prove it.

CAVALLERIA  (1936)  * with switchable English subtitles *

A cavalry officer loves and is loved by the daughter of a nobleman from Piedmont.  But the girl, to save her father from financial ruin, marries a wealthy Austrian instead.  The cavalryman then dedicates himself passionately to horse riding and becomes one of the most famous riders in Italy.  A few years later, he meets his old flame in Rome and the two start to meet one another on the sly.  However, bitter gossip follows them wherever they go and, eventually, the woman's brother is forced to fight a duel to defend the honor of his sister.  When she sends the cavalryman a Dear John letter, he ends up killing his horse in a competition, because he's distracted by his lost love.  Vowing to never ride another horse again, our hero joins the air corps, where he finds his glorious end on the field of battle.

REMBRANDT  (1936)

1642 in Leyden, Holland:  Rembrandt van Rijn, a painter and miller's son, experiences the death of his beloved wife Saskia and, during her funeral, finishes her portrait before her face fades for him forever. Later, while working on a painting commissioned by Captain Banning Cocq, Rembrandt depicts the sixteen gentlemen of the civic guard as disfigured. After humiliating them at a public unveiling of the painting, Rembrandt refuses to apologize and loses the portrait commissions that had assured his income. Still racked with grief about Saskia's death, Rembrandt longs for another wife and marries the cold and shrewish Geertje Dirx. Ten years following Saskia's death, Rembrandt has become bankrupt and his house and its furnishing are sold at auction. He then paints a beggar and tells him the Biblical story of David and Saul. Geertje harangues Rembrandt about their poverty, and he learns that Govaert Flinck, an old student of his, is now making a handsome living painting aristocrats. Rembrandt, however, refuses to compromise his art for money.

THE POWER OF LIFE  (1938)  * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

Nathan Rabinovitz, a bookkeeper for the Feinberg Dress Company, devotes his spare time to his inventions.  One day, he's offered $3,000 for one of his inventions and he promises to decide whether to sell or not by the end of the next day.  When he learns that Sam Schindler, his daughter Leah's fiancee, needs $500 to avoid going to jail for embezzling money, Nathan visits Sam's father, who flatly refuses to loan his son the money to avoid prison.  Nathan argues that the power of life comes through finding happiness in one's children's lives and that parents mustn't forget their obligations to their children (three guesses which man's children are going to be living in the basement for twenty years while paying off their student loans).  Schindler has a ready answer for Nathan, though:  Sam stole from his account and few children really love their parents.  In fact, he says, children and the enemies of their parents (guess whose children ended up working summers and attending community college).

TWO SISTERS  (1938)  * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

On her deathbed in a Bronx tenement, Mrs. Glickstein makes her eldest daughter Betty promise that she will be both sister and mother to her younger sister Sally and to do everything possible to ensure her happiness.  Thus begins a life of tireless work for Betty, supporting her sister through nursing school, her fiancee through medical school and her father in a TB sanatorium, only to have her happiness destroyed when her sister and fiancee fall in love.

E CADUTA UNA DONNA  (1941)  * with switchable English subtitles *

A pregnant, unwed woman is forced to flee from her village because of the scandal and gos to Milan to have her baby.  It is there that she meets a doctor of high moral character, who falls in love with her.  It isn't long before he decides he wants to marry her, but shortly after the deed is done, there's trouble:  the doctor is unable to leave the woman's past in the past and can't stand the sight of a boy, that isn't his.  So, the woman decides to entrust her child to mother of the man who got her pregnant (who, in the interim, has died), hoping to reconcile her relationship with the doctor.  The sacrifice is too much, however, and she's soon faced with the irresistible desire to take back her child.

The young Viennese woman Vera inherits her father's estate on her 25th birthday.  Her boyfriend urges her to sell the woods and meadows.  However, the hardworking administrator of the estate, Heinz Huber, uses all his means to prevent Vera from doing so.  During a trip they take together, everyone seems to get to know one another better and grow closer.

AUF DER GRUNEN WIESE FILM PROGRAM  (1953)

4-paged film program put out in conjunction with this film.  Program is in very good shape, though it does have multiple folds.

The Italian Riviera attracts visitors with its azure sea, cloudless sky, and its carefree beach life.  A dream vacation has begun for the young musicians of a jazz band from Swabia, who are earning their keep under the southern sun by doing guest performances in a Lido bar.  It only starts to get unpleasant, when the musicians get to know a rich and belligerent countess, who considers music to be a curse for mankind.  The despotic lady not only torpedoes the band's performances, but manages to interfere in her niece's love life as well.

Little Florian wants nothing more than his widowed father to find a new wife and, thus, to finally get a new mom.  And it would appear the young boy's found an appropriate candidate in the likeable bookseller Gabriele.  Now he only needs to find a way to get his unsuspecting father to meet the beautiful young lady.  The best way to do that seems to be a Summer cruise on a Danube steamer, for which Gabriele has already bought a ticket.  Will shrewd, little Florian come up with a plan to help romance bloom between the two?

COMMISSARS  (1969)  * with switchable English subtitles *

The year is 1921.  The Russian Civil War is slowly drawing to its inevitable end and the Party has sent out its most experienced fighters to learn how to build and manage the new Soviet state.  But the town, in which these men have gathered, has become the target of anti-Soviet gangs preparing to go on the attack.  Among those sent here to learn, there are different ideas as to how to run the new state and it soon develops that the White counterrevolutionaries aren't their only worry.

RUSSIAN EMPIRE:  PASSPORT ISSUED IN KIEV  (1908)

Passport issued in Kiev in 1908, when the city was part of the Russian Empire (to become extinct in 10 years hence).  The twenty paged passport has entries and stamps on 8 of the pages.  Intact, but spine is just starting to come loose.

GERMAN ARBEITSBUCH ISSUED IN BRESLAU  (1916)

24-paged Arbeitsbuch issued to a 14 year old.  There are entries on 5 of the pages, terminating in the year 1919.

GERMAN ARBEITSBUCH ISSUED IN WALDENBURG  (1916)

24-paged Arbeitsbuch issued to a 14 year old.  There are entries on 4 of the pages, terminating in the year 1919.

GERMANY:  PASSPORT ISSUED IN BIELEFELD  (1922)

Passport issued on 13 January 1922 to a 34 year old woman in Bielefeld.  I'm suspecting this is a contemporary usage of a passport put out a long time before, as the cover page reads "Preussen".  Also included is a photo of the passport holder taken by the Dutch consulate for use in the issuance of a visa.  The passport has 16 pages, of which there are entries and stamps on 9 of them.

POLAND:  PASSPORT AND INTERNAL ID  (BEDZIN - 1926)

16-paged Dowód Osobisty issued in 1926 to a 28 year old man.  Until 1928, these documents could be used as both an internal passport and for foreign travel.  However, they were quite expensive to obtain (100 złotych, which was $20.00 at the time in a country where the overwhelming majority of its 38 million inhabitants lived in rural areas and were quite poor).  Until 1928, it was not required to have an internal passport.  This changed when, in that year, a presidential decree made the personal ID available to anyone for only 90 groszy ($ 0.18) and which was valid as a national ID only.  Among the many items of interest listed in this ID are the holder's ability to read and write Polish; the listing of his main language as Polish (don't forget that more than a third of the new state's population were of a different nationality); the religion of the ID holder; marital status; occupation; whether military service requirements were satisfied (in this case, the holder was a reservist); and information indicating what documents were used to verify the ID holder's right to the passport (in this case, a check of county records).  Of the document's 18 pages, there are entries and stamps on 5 of the pages.

CZECHOSLOVAKIA:  PASSPORT - RYLOVA, ANNA  (1932)

32-paged passport issued on 10 February 1932 to a 19 year old woman.  There are entries and stamps on 12 of the pages.

GERMANY:  DRIVER'S LICENSE  (FACH - 1932)

Driver's license issued to a 24 year old man in Springe (near Hameln in Niedersachsen) on 03 August 1932.  Minor fraying along the edges.

POLAND:  2 ZLOTE  (1936)  (BM 3412601)

PROTEKTORAT BOHMEN UND MAHREN:  ID CARD FOR MARKET VENDORS  (1939)

ID card issued in occupied Bohmen und Mahren for peddlers, flea market salesmen, traders, hawkers, etc.  The purpose of the card was to obtain discounted train and streetcar tickets for business purposes.  Issued in the beginning of 1939, it was valid til the end of the year.  The official stamp of the Protektorat is embossed over the photo.

NAZI GERMANY:  WHW PROPAGANDA SONG BOOKLET (DAS DEUTSCHE LIED:  LIEBESLIEDER - HEFT 5)

The Winterhilfswerk (WHW) was an annual drive by the Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt (the National Socialist People’s Welfare Organization) to help finance its charitable work. Its slogan was "None shall starve nor freeze". It ran from 1933-1945 and was designed to provide food and fuel to Germans. The Hitlerjugend and Bund Deutscher Mädel were extremely active in collecting for this charity. Donors were often given small souvenir gifts of negligible value as a sign of appreciation for their donations. A typical such gift was a very small propaganda booklet about 0.8" wide x 1.5" tall. More generous donors would receive nicer gifts, such as lapel pins on a wide variety of themes. Each individual miniature book, badge, badge set or toy set was only available for two or three days of a particular collection drive. So the populace would be encouraged to donate the following week and thereby collect the latest in the series.

This booklet (about 1.4" x 2") has approximately 12 pages.

NAZI GERMANY:  WEHRPASS - ROSS, FRANZ  (1937)

52-paged military ID issued in 1937 to a 43 year old with entries up to 1944.  The ID indicates the holder as being from Ansbach and working as a businessman in civilian life.  He was called up as a draftee in 1943 and 1944 into the Landsturm (more colloquially referred to as the Volkssturm).  There is also indication, that he was sworn into active military service on 11 March 1938 (i.e., the day before  the Anschluss in Austria) and released back into civilian service twelve days later.  The pass has a stamp indicating he was healthy and, therefore, capable of being discharged signed by the staff veterinarian (?!?).  There are entries and stamps on 11 of the pages.  The front of the Wehrpass is stamped "Heer".  Included with the pass is a Feldpost sent via registered mail on 01 February 1945, informing the ID holder that he should be prepared to be called up for active duty at any moment.

GERMANY: MILITAR WOCHENBLATT - ZEITSCHRIFT DER DEUTSCHEN WEHRMACHT (27.09.40)

Newspaper put out by and for members of the Wehrmacht with approximately 48 pages of news, strategic analyses, opinions and current events on all the fronts, as well as containing advertisements.  Minor nicking and tears, mostly to the covers.  Very good condition and quite intact.  Written in Fraktur.  Some of the topics in this issue:

·         Grossdeutschlands Freiheitskrieg 1940

·         Franzosisches Feldherrntum

·         Aus dem Feldzug in Frankreich

·         Betrachungen zu den letzten Banden des Archivwerkes

·         Bernsberg, 1840 bis 1940

USSR:  NKVD-ISSUED PASSPORT FOR A POLE IN LVIV, UKRAINE  (1941)

1941-issued passport with 14 pages.  On the back page is an indication that the passport was printed in (Soviet) Ukraine in 1938 and, indeed, the headings on each page are in both Russian and Ukrainian.  The holder of the passport is a 27 year old woman the passport identifies as being of Polish nationality and living in Lviv, Ukraine (formerly Lwów in Poland prior to 17 September 1939).  In September 1939, the Soviets invaded eastern Poland and gave the residents there the choice of either accepting Soviet passports or to face possible deportation east as an undesirable "alien".  The all-important "Category 5" on the passport indicates her "social class", in this case, "service worker".  Passport was issued on 22 May 1941 and was valid until that date in 1946.  Over the picture on the passport is an indented stamp reading "NKVD", the forerunner to the KGB.  The entry designating the issuing agent also indicates that the local NKVD issued the passport.   There are entries on 9 of the pages.  Cover is loose and the pages are starting to loosen from the stapling.

VICHY FRANCE:  ID CARD  (GIRARD, PIERRE - 1941)

ID card issued to a 25 year old man on 20 February 1941 in Marseille.

NAZI GERMANY:  DER ADLER NEWSPAPER  ("Zwischenspiel in Afrika" - 31 March 1942)

The bi-weekly newsmagazine put out by the German Air Ministry.  Minor edge wear and tiny tears.  Intact and in very good shape.  This issue:  page 93 - 104:

·         Delphine der Luft

·         Auf Wurfweite am Feind

·         Wenn die Bombe fallt

·         Von britischen Panzern verfolgt

·         Fietjes Zehnter

SOUTH AFRICA:  10 SHILLINGS  (1943)  (E 054.292)

DIE KUNST IM DEUTSCHEN REICH - APRIL 1944  (AUSGABE A)

Large format, softcovered book (about 11" x 14") with highlighted artworks of the Third Reich displayed in each issue, overseen by Albert Speer, Richard Klein and Leonhard Gall, all notable figures in art and architecture during the era.  This issue covers pages 74 - 96.  Topics include:

·         Malerei als Formausdruck der Zeit

·         Der Holzschneider Switbert Lobisser

Some age spotting and age staining.

KENNKARTE #38 - SCHUTZANGEHORIGE BROMBERG  (issued 25 September 1944)

Kennkarte (Deutsches Reich) issued to a Pole with the remark, "Schutzangehörige (eingegl. Ostgebiete)", which indicated the holder was not a German national, but a "foreign" resident of the annexed Eastern Territories, which was the name given to that part of Poland incorporated into the Reich after the end of the Polish Campaign in 1939.  Such ID holders were considered "probationary" residents, whose privileges could be withdrawn at any time, if their behavior was not considered acceptable to Reich authorities.  In such cases, the revocation of the status usually led to expulsion into the Generalgouvernement, the "reservoir" remnant of the Polish nation under German jurisdiction or deportation into a concentration camp in extreme cases.

This ID card was issued on 25 September 1944 and was valid until 24 September 1949.  The ID holder was a 36 year old woman as of the date of issue.

KENNKARTE #39 - SCHUTZANGEHORIGE BROMBERG  (issued 15 November 1944)

GERMAN-OCCUPIED POLAND:  PERSONALAUSWEIS - KATTOWITZ  (URBANCZEK, JOHANN - 1943)

ID card issued on 09 September 1943 to a 38 year old man in occupied Katowice (Kattowitz in German).  That this was apparently a temporary ID card is reflected in two points:  (1) the typewritten entry on the front of the card indicates it's only valid for two months (Gültig bis 8. November 1943); and (2) the advisory written at the bottom of the page, which states that this ID was valid only until the introduction of actual ID cards in the annexed Eastern Territories  (Gültig bis zur Einführung der Kennkarte in den eingegliederten Ostgebieten).  Since Kennkarten had long since been issued to residents of the annexed territories, this ID card obviously was filling in for either a lost Kennkarte or serving as temporary ID until the arrival of a new one.  Also on the front page is a statement that this ID does not serve as proof of German citizenship or that the holder was part of the "community".  Indeed, nowhere is the nationality of the ID holder indicated on this document.
