Der im Ruhestand lebende, pfiffige Zacharias Bräsig ist allen ein guter Freund und versucht zu vermitteln, wo er kann. So hilft er dem Verwalter Karl Hawermann, das Gut des verstorbenen Gutsherrn zu erhalten, da Leutnant von Rambow, der Erbe des Gutes, mehr Theoretiker als Praktiker ist, und er knüpft auch Beziehungen zwischen jungen Leuten, so dass es am Ende des Films eine Doppelhochzeit gibt.

The clever Zacharias Brasig, now retired, is a good friend to all and tries to help out, where he can. Thus, he helps the administrator Karl Hawermann to get an estate from the now deceased owner, since Lieutenant von Rambow, the heir to the estate, more of a theoretician than a practitioner is. Brasig also meddles in the relationships of young people, so that by the end of the film, there's a double marriage.
