Two years earlier, the “Aurora” – the ship belonging to the fur traders Halvard and Bjorn – left harbor and since then has not returned from Greenland.  In Hammersund, the hometown of the traders, the conclusion has been come to, that both men are dead.  Halvard’s beloved, Petra, has even married the young Olaf, though she did not do so willingly.  The marriage suffers because of Petra’s grief.  And so Olaf decides that the best thing to do is to sign on to a cutter of fur traders, so he can show his wife he’s a real man.  After all, nothing spells “manhood” like making your wife a widow twice over in the space of a few years.

Vor zwei Jahren war die "Aurora", das Schiff der Pelzjäger Halvard und Björn, ausgelaufen und seitdem nicht mehr von Grönland zurückgekehrt. In Hammersund, der Heimat der beiden, ist die tiefe Sorge inzwischen der traurigen Einsicht gewichen, dass beide tot sind. Halvards Geliebte, Petra, hat sogar, wenn auch widerwillig, den jungen Olaf geheiratet. Die Ehe leidet unter Petras Trauer, weshalb Olaf sich entschließt, auf einem Kutter für Pelzjäger anzuheuern – er will seiner Frau zeigen, dass auch er ein ganzer Kerl ist.
