Rührstück um eine aufopferungsvolle Mutter, die, nachdem ihr Mann vom Blitz erschlagen wird, ihre drei Söhne und eine Tochter alleine großziehen muss. Sie kauft in Wien eine kleine Wäscherei und tut alles, um ihren Kindern ein gutes Leben zu ermöglichen. Als eine Angestellte ein Kind von einem ihrer Söhne erwartet, verlangt sie von den Beiden, zu heiraten. Ein anderer Sohn muss nach einem Streit das Haus verlassen. Der dritte Sohn erblindet. Für ihn bringt die Mutter ihr größtes Opfer: Sie spendet ihm eine Hornhaut. Schließlich versöhnt sie sich mit dem Sohn, der das Haus verlassen hat, und kann als Großmutter auf ein schweres, aber erfülltes Leben zurückblicken.

Mutterliebe was the founding film for a genre of movies revolving around the concept of motherhood.  The film tells the story of the Pirlinger family:  Marthe, the mother, and her four children.  Widowed at an early age, Marthe is faced with raising her four children on her own.  In order to make enough money to do so, she sets up a home laundry business and works long hours to keep the family afloat.  She also takes in a lodger, who later proposes to Marthe, but she turns him down.  Marthe's life is a neverending series of sacrifices and worries about her children and their fates.  You would think that her children would recognize and appreciate the hardships she experiences on their behalf.  However, like enthusiastic puppies, who think only of themselves and stumble through the world oblivious to the dangers their mothers know about through experience, Marthe's children are an ever-increasing source of trouble, worry and disasters, which hardly diminish over time.  She never really gets to sleep for a moment with both eyes closed in blissful rest, but, eventually, when she's too old to do anything selfish for herself and enjoy what is left of her life, her children finally recognize from whence their bread was buttered.
