Here, he meets Trude again, the daughter of his foster parents, whom he wishes to marry. But he also see Marikke again, a pretty woman, who is gripped by a dark secret. The old passion between the two fires up again upon their meeting. When Marikke discovers that she is the daughter of a vagabond, she wrestles with her conscience as to whether she should tempt Georg away from Trude. On the night before the summer solstice, the night before Georg's wedding, the secret couple throws all caution to the wind for a few precious hours.
