Emmanuel Striese is the leader of a traveling theatre and is planning a guest appearance in the small town of Oberlanningen. Striese received a theatre piece from Professor Gollwitz’ maid. Gollwitz is a prominent personality in the town and an enemy of the theatre. The piece, however, was written by him in his youth. Striese suspects he’ll have a full house, when it becomes known, that a citizen of the town wrote the piece. He asks Gollwitz for the performance rights --- with success; but only under the condition, that no one finds out, who wrote the play.

Emanuel Striese ist der Leiter eines Wandertheaters und plant ein Gastspiel in dem kleinen Ort Oberlanningen. Vom Dienstmädchen des Professors Gollwitz, einer angesehenen Persönlichkeit des Ortes, bekommt Striese ein Theaterstück zugespielt, das der theaterfeindliche Professor in seiner Jugend verfasst hat. Striese wittert ein volles Haus, wenn bekannt wird, dass ein Bürger des Ortes der ehrenwerte Autor ist. Er bittet Gollwitz, ihm die Aufführungsrechte zu überlassen – mit Erfolg, aber unter der Bedingung, dass niemand erfährt, wer der Verfasser des Textes ist.
