Conrad Schroeter is a great actor and the artistic director of a theatre in Berlin.  In the young Gisela Ahrens, only recently taken on as a member of the theatre cast, he sees not only a talented actress, but someone in whom he thinks he's fallen in love.  To Conrad's great distress, however, Gisela has fallen for the scheming seducer Jurgensen, who drove Conrad's daughter to suicide.
