Melodram vor dem Hintergrund der Napoleonischen Eroberungsfeldzüge: Der auf seinen eigenen Machterhalt bedachte König Friedrich Wilhelm III. hat gegen den Willen der jungen Offiziere am preußischen Hof ein Bündnis mit Napoleon geschlossen. Prinz Louis Ferdinand gehört zu den Gegnern dieses Abkommens und plädiert für den Krieg gegen die Franzosen.  Diese Überzeugung und seine Zuneigung für die gütige Königin Luise veranlassen den misstrauischen König, Louis Ferdinand zu brüskieren. Als Luise den Ernst der politischen Lage erkennt, engagiert sie sich zum Wohle Preußens für ein Bündnis mit Russland. Doch ihr Einsatz kommt zu spät, denn Napoleons Heer besetzt bereits das Land, und das Königspaar muss nach Ostpreußen fliehen.  

Melodrama with the Napoleonic wars of conquest set in the background:  King Friedrich Wilhelm III has used his power to override the wishes of his young officers at the Prussian court and has made an alliance with Napoleon.  Prince Louis Ferdinand belongs to those against this agreement and calls for a war against the French.  This conviction and his affection for the gracious Queen Luise, causes the suspicious king to snub Louis Ferdinand.  However, when Luise recognizes the seriousness of the political situation, she pushes for an alliance with Russia for the benefit of Prussia.  Her urgings have come too late, for Napoleon’s armies have already occupied the country and the royal couple must flee to East Prussia.
