In dieser Provinzposse gerät die Hofbesitzerin Adele Hecht mit ihrem Nachbarn, dem Hofrat a.D. Warrenheim aneinander, nachdem dessen Diener Valentin das seltene Ei von Adeles Ente Monika entwendet und gebraten hat. Der Streit belastet die sich anbahnende romantische Beziehung zwischen Adeles Neffen Theo und Warrenheims Tochter Hansi sowie den Flirt zwischen der Magd Liesl und Valentin. Ein improvisiertes Schiedsgericht soll über den Fall entscheiden, doch als die Ente während der Verhandlung wider Erwarten ein weiteres Ei legt, lösen sich sämtliche Konflikte in Wohlgefallen auf.  

In this “provincial comedy”, the inn owner Adele Hecht gets into a fight with her neighbor, the retired court advisor Warrenheim, after his servant Valentine steals one of Monika’s eggs (Monika is a duck who belongs to Adele, by the way) and serves it sunnyside up.  This conflict is interfering with the romantic relationship between Adele’s nephew Theo and Warrenheim’s daughter Hansi, as well as the flirting going on between the maid Liesl and the egg-thief Valentine.  An improvised tribunal is supposed to decide whether Valentine will get the chair for duck roasting; but during the trial, and much to the surprise of anyone who cares, the duck lays another egg and everyone suddenly loves thy neighbor.
