1936: During the Spanish Civil War, five Communists are selected to act as a rearguard for their comrades who are pulling back from a hopeless position during a fascist attack. They're supposed to rendezvous with a radio operator, but when they arrive at the meeting point, nobody's around. In the search for the missing radioman, Commissar Wittig is shot. Before dying, he hands over an important message for the remaining men to transport across enemy lines. The message is torn into five pieces and each piece hidden in an empty cartridge. Now an odysees across the barren mountain range begins, with the constant fear of dehydration and death by enemy fire constantly threatening the men.
