DAS UNGARMÄDEL (1934)

Charles Klein Writers: Friedrich Dammann, Max Wallner Stars: Adele Sandrock, Georg Alexander, Erik Ode
$10.49

Princess Stauffensteinová decides to no longer support her nephew Poldi, an idle bachelor, and decides he is to marry Baroness Štefi Houhenauovou. The two are to meet at the winter sports resort in Kitzbühel, where Štefi lives. Unfortunately, all good plans come to nothing, when the gypsy dancer Ilonka shows up.  Originally entitled Zigeunerblut, the film’s title was changed upon the insistence of Goebbels’ Ministry of Propaganda, which had complete control over film production.  Apparently, Nazi racial policies found it inconvenient to link Gypsies to Hungarians  (an accurate assertion; but, let’s face it:  back then, to say someone was Hungarian was to immediately assume an incorrect Gypsy heritage).  Much to Goebbels’ chagrin, however, the film won widespread popularity abroad and was known as Gypsy Blood in a multitude of languages … and would continue to be known under that name, National Socialist annoyance or not.
