Im Himmel findet eine Wette statt. Der böse Geist Lumpaci soll nur dann weiter über die Erde wandeln dürfen, wenn es ihm gelingt, einen Menschen zum Schlechten zu verführen. Er nimmt sich drei wandernde Handwerksburschen vor, denen er einen Lottogewinn verschafft: den Schneider Zwirn, den Tischler Leim und den Schuster Knieriem. Nach einem Jahr wollen sie sich wiedertreffen und sehen, was aus ihnen geworden ist.  

A bet is made up in Heaven.  Evil spirit Lumpaci is to be allowed to keep making trouble on Earth, if he’s able to tempt someone into becoming evil.  He decides to try his luck with three itinerant artisans, ensuring they win the lottery:  the tailor Zwirn; the carpenter Leim and the shoemaker Knieriem.  After one year, the betters will get together and see what’s become of the three.
