Eine deutsche wissenschaftliche Expedition findet im Südosten Afrikas ein junges Mädchen, das unzweifelhaft europäischer Abstammung ist. Vor allem Thoren, der Kameramann der Expedition, ist von ihr fasziniert. Es gelingt ihnen, das Mädchen einzufangen und mit nach Europa zu nehmen. Dort stellt sich anhand eines Fotos heraus, dass "Liane" die Alleinerbin eines Riesenvermögens sein könnte. Ihr einziger Verwandter ist ihr Großvater, der alte Reeder Amelongen. Da dieser sich vom Geschäft zurückgezogen hat, leitet Viktor Schöninck den Betrieb. Nach vielen vergeblichen Versuchen, das Mädchen als Schwindlerin zu entlarven, findet der alte Amelongen einen eindeutigen Beweis für die Herkunft Lianes. Doch bevor dies bekannt wird, wird der alte Reeder ermordet aufgefunden. Viele Beweise deuten auf das Mädchen als Täterin hin.

A German scientific expedition finds a young girl in southeast Africa, who is undoubtedly of European descent.  Thoren, the expedition’s cameraman, is fascinated by her more than anyone else in the group.  They succeed in capturing the girl and taking her back to Europe.  It turns out, that a photo is the basis for the possibility that “Liana” might be the sole inheritor of a massive fortune.  Her only living relative is her grandfather, the old Reeder Amelongen.  As he’s since retired from the family business, the operation is being run by Victor Schoninck.  After many failed attempts to reveal the girl as a swindler, old Ameongen finds the ultimate proof of Liane’s heritage.  But before he can reveal it, he’s found murdered.  And there’s a lot of proof pointing to the girl as the murderer.
