Every kind of progress is an abomination for the conservative governor Gordian.  Whenever possible, he attempts to nip in the bud any innovation or progressive proposal.  That’s also the case when the director Silbernagel requests the construction of a new theatre and his assessor Hans von Planck asks for the hand of Gordian’s niece Franziska in marriage.  When the disappointed Franziska sneaks out of the house at night to secretly meet Hans and to marry him in spite of her uncle’s objections, she’s surprised by her uncle. 

Jede Art von Fortschritt ist dem konservativen Landeshauptmann Gordian von Schwingenbeutel ein Greuel. Wann immer es geht, versucht er Neuerungen und progressive Vorschläge im Keim zu ersticken. So auch, als Direktor Silbernagel den Bau eines Theaters beantragt, und sein Assessor Hans von Planck um die Hand von Gordians Nichte Franziska anhält. Als die enttäuschte Franziska sich nachts aus dem Haus schleicht, um ihren Hans heimlich und gegen den Willen ihres Onkels doch zu heiraten, wird sie von ihm überrascht.
