The five singers --- Peter, Paul, Max, Emil and Gustav --- know how to imitate jazz instruments with their voices.  They live in a poor house, whose administrator was just murdered.  Returning from a backyard tour, the police are already waiting for them.  Paul is the main suspect and is to be arrested.  But Peter can’t allow that, for he knows how much their mutual friend Maria loves him.  He thus lets himself be accused of the murder and goes off to jail.  (You’re kidding, right?)

Die fünf Sänger Peter, Paul, Max, Emil und Gustav verstehen die Kunst, alle Jazzinstrumente mit ihren Stimmen nachzuahmen. Sie wohnen in einem ärmlichen Haus, dessen Verwalter gerade ermordet wurde. Als sie von einer Hinterhof-Tour zurückkommen, wartet bereits die Polizei auf sie. Paul ist der Hauptverdächtige und soll verhaftet werden. Doch das kann Peter nicht zulassen, denn er weiß, wie sehr ihre gemeinsame Bekannte Marie seinen Freund liebt. Er bezichtigt sich daher selbst der Tat und geht ins Gefängnis.
