Two sketches illustrate the absurdity of war: In Scherzo alla polacca, a shrewd man, trying to preserve his own skin in wartime, ultimately becomes a hero and find a reason to fight. Initially trying to avoid getting sucked into the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, his drunken behavior, coupled with a disregard for safety and cowardice when he's sober, combine to make him appear rather sane in an insane world. Doing all he can to remain alive and avoid a heroic death, the results are far different than what he ever expected. In the second sketch, Ostinato lugubre, a man attempts a hopeless escape from a prison camp, because he can no longer stand the confinement and idiocy of professional soldiers trying to maintain a semblance of military behavior in a prison. Nevertheless, his escape boosts his fellow prisoners' moral, while he lies hidden from both the Germans and his comrades alike.
