The young doctor Dumartin is developing a serum against an epidemic of meningitis in his Basel clinic. Against the will of the head of the clinic, Professor Tscherko, Dumarting tests his serum on a patient, who, at first, starts to recover, but then dies. The widow of the patient understandably accuses Dumartin of murder. Feeling responsible, Dumartin destroys the formula for the serum and wants to commit suicide. His suicide attempt, however, fails, but now he is suffering from schizophrenia and hallucinations.

Der junge Arzt Dumartin entwickelt in einer Baseler Klinik ein Serum gegen die grassierende Hirnhautentzündung. Er testet es gegen den Willen des Klinikleiters Professor Tscherko an einem Patienten, der sich zunächst erholt, dann jedoch stirbt. Die Witwe klagt ihn des Mordes an. Dumartin vernichtet schuldbewusst die Formel für das Serum und will sich das Leben nehmen. Der Selbstmordversuch misslingt, doch fortan leidet er unter Schizophrenie und Halluzinationen.
